Chopping boards on the wall?!!

Those are modern art creations of great significance. They represent Yin, Yang and Yung, the three fundamental life forces. Their chipboard bases stand for the worthless, homogenised pap which we are fed daily by the media, while the wood veneers epitomise the thin layer of decorum that binds our otherwise fractured society together.

PS. I sometimes help my daughter with her fine art assignments.

Dave - that's priceless. Love it.

    Re - hot conservatories.

Rather than expensive blinds I made retractable "sails" which just slot onto the beams of the roof for my mum and dad's conservatory. Basically some light coloured canvas with large brass rings sewn on, which attach to hooks on the beams. Very MSE. You could use those brass ring punch kit thingies - sorry no idea what they are called.

My parents chose cream to reflect the sun back and make it even cooler but a smart blue and white stripe would look good and give a jaunty "nautical" look.

Re the fancy house - sorry no good at doing links.

It looks like a mini Versailles:rotfl::rotfl: Delusions of grandeur obviously.

Just goes to show - money can't buy good taste or style. ;)

Lesson, what a clever idea! I might try that ( although would be a bit wary about making holes in the beams) if I find another house with a conservatory.

Mum & Dad's conservatory beams are wooden so no issues with screwing hooks in. For upvc you could try a "sticky pad" version of hook.

I did exactly the same in our last two houses that both had large south-facing, timber, glass-roof conservatories (the first we actually had rebuilt in the Gothic style of the original Victorian one, after it had been allowed to fall down during the house's previous incarnation as four flats) - the canvas blinds (and central heating) enabled us to make use of the room all year round, including Christmas Day a couple of times. In our next house the canvas blinds I made were a godsend in a very hot room that we employed as an extension of our kitchen with island, dressers etc - so definitely worth doing :D

    Thanks. :)

I really do help with secretarial aspects fine art assignments, as my DD is dyslexic, but her work is much more down to earth than that bit of old nonsense.

I'm not knocking the solar gain aspect; in fact that's brilliant, but it all goes out of control for me when we get real summer weather. Like a lot of cheaper conservatories, mine isn't vented well, and so I end up sitting in our north-facing kitchen on hot, sunny days. :(

I suppose the ideal conservatory would have those bi-fold doors so that it could turn into more of a veranda when necessary. My relatives have a posh Amdega with all the blinds and what-have-you, but it's still too hot for me on summer afternoons.

Some friends have an outdoor covered seating area, that is open at one end. It is attached to the house, and it is really delightful to go out and sit in it when it's raining! We sit comfortably and warm (in the summer) whilst the rain blasts down half a metre away.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
