Mythology.
There's significant differences between spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Grammar is often caught, although it's also taught. Punctuation follows rules, which must be learned, but at least they are reasonably straightforward.
Spelling is somewhat different, for although it often follows rules, there are many instances when it doesn't, to say nothing of the various homophones to trip the unwary!
FYI, it is still possible to lose marks for weak spelling at higher levels in education, although possibly not at primary school. Poor grammar and punctuation have always been penalised, both in SATS and in secondary school exams.0
