They may have knocked one wall down and then discovered it was the one holding the rest of the house up and so started to rebuild?0 -

Back in the 1950s (I believe),there was a common (not very successful) use of two shades of brown to make cheap woodwork look like walnut and other patterned woods. Perhaps someone thought they remembered the technique....0 -
