I live in a 2 bed flat,in the SA4 area the flat is heated by the worst form of heating ever!-storage heaters  there are 5 of the things in the flat. I'm a single mum and I dont work at the mo and I use to pay the bill of weekly with a card. I phoned the electric company (swalec) up before xmas about losing my payment card, the guy on the phone asked as I was on the phone to do a reading he then went on to say that the weekly payments were to go up from £17 to £24 !! I nearly cried. He then said as I was on benifits I could have a token meter put in. I was told by some1 about winter fuel allowance which people on benifits and the over 60s can apply for. The only thing I can get up on the net is an article from the mirror newpaper from last November where a single mum applied for the allowance and it helped out lots. I cant find anything from the gov (surprise) about it though and was hoping some1 could help me out on this please. thanx
Just to add that I had applied for a goverment grant so I could have gas central heating in but all I was offered was an extra heater.

Is your energy provider the most competitive for you as well? It might be worth changing to another cheaper provider, fit energy saving bulbs etc..
Edit: oh and this

sorry to be a pain but just a quick question are your storage heaters linked, its just that i have four in my three bedroom house and never need them all on, usually just one for down stairs and one for upstairs, by seeing which ones you can turn off should lower your bill, you shouldnt really need all five onIf you want the rainbow you have to go through the rain.

No they arent linked and the space between them is big, my children bedroom 1 is broken at the mo and even though i have the hallway 1 on (which is the nearest) its not making any difference its freezing in there. I only ever have 3 on-my room kids room and hallway. I cant have the kitchen 1 on cos its obstructed and the living room 1 is right by a big drafty window so no point in having it on."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

Just to say, the links tripled gave were (useful but) not what you said in your OP "winter fuel allowance for people on benefits". We do have a benefits board at MSE and I'm sure if such a thing exists they will know about it.

Who owns the property you or landlord? Do you know how long your tenancy agreement is for? Are you with SWALEC on a prepayment meter? Economy 7?
We may be able to find you a cheaper supplier.
SWALEC just raised their prices on Jan 1st
For example
SWALEC prepayment 5000 kwh annual = £598
Ebico prepayment 5000 kwh = £568
If you use more than 5000kwh the savings will be less
If you use less than 5000kwh the savings will be more
If you get that 20% discount from SWALEC you'd be better off staying with them.0 -
The council own the property. Which means the tenancy is lifelong if i wanted. I'm having a token meter put in and yes it is economy 7.
How do I find out how much kwh I use each year to see it will be better to swap ? thanx"Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

You can go through your past bills and add it up, or give them a call and they should tell you.0
