You are so lucky my choice is oh lets see asda or tesco. We have no fish shops worth mentioning or butchers & no proper farmers market , just craft markets with the occasional over inflated priced stall purporting to be a farmers market. We do have a borough market, but it's prices are no cheaper than the supermarket . Mind we do have Home Bargains!!
  • Looking for a nice leg of lamb.. does anyone know a good butcheres in the area?

Ooooh sorry - I haven't revisited this thread for ages so it's probably a bit late for you now, Goldilocks...

Some of the meat shops in Peckham stay open late into the evening.

However in terms of "decent" butchers, there's a good one on Peckham Hill Street (just off Old Kent Road). And there's William Rose in East Dulwich - only a bus ride away!

If you walk down the street in Brixton market from the main road and turn 1st right then enter a little shopping mall on the left. There is a good cheap butcher in there the 1st one on the left. Sells lovely lamb. The one just after that sells shrink wrapped bacon off cuts for £1 and you do get a lot.

If anybody is reading this I am giving away free low energy lightbulbs outside Tesco on the Old Kent Road today and tomorrow.

    Is this thread still 'live'??

Just in case anyone's still out there and interested - there's a food cooperative selling lots of organic, vegan food in bulk and just over cost at a place called Fareshares near Elephant and Castle (it's in SE17 - just went there for the first time last week and bought some things at very good prices compared to buying organic elsewhere). It's open quite limited hours, only on Thurs Fri and Sat, but run all by volunteers - an impressive project. Their website is https://www.fareshares.org.uk.

wow, thanks saffouri - i have just cut dairy out of my diet and it's been costing me a fortune in experimenting in health food shops!!

for anyone else in the area, there is now a proper fishmongers in herne hill as well, so if you're around during the day it makes it a good place to head to: butcher, baker, fishmonger and greengrocer all around the station (makes me feel all oldfashioned!). they don't seem to be open into the evening though...

Welcome big smoke. Have you gone in for ordering things in bulk from places like Suma or Infinity Foods? (I've never done it myself but know of people who have - you need storage space though as minimum orders are £250 or thereabouts.) I think Fareshares get some of their grains etc. from Infinity, a muesli I bought there was from them.

And I'm actually in Herne Hill! - haven't used that fishmongers yet as some of the prices looked expensive  but maybe if you pick and choose you can get something more reasonable. But have bought meat for braising (in Guinness - yum) from the butchers in the same road.

PS big smoke - for buying soya milk the supermarkets might be cheaper - that probably needs checking - I don't remember the prices at Fareshares (was on my bike and didn't want to carry that much!)

Hi saffouri - thanks for waking up my thread :D :j :j

I had absolutely no idea Fareshares existed :T :T and will definitely look them up and see if it would be worth my while joining.

I pass through Elephant and Castle on a daily basis, so this would be perfect for me.
