You can get stardrops in the sainsburys in East Dulwich ( the large 24 hour one on Dog Kennel lane) 75 p I think..
I'm going to try to see if I can get some oxtail from one of those Halal butchers in Peckham on Saturday ( quick ride on the 436).. anyone wanna join me.. not sure if I am brave enough!
Stardrops also available at Morrisons or Savers, in Peckham - can't remember prices but none as cheap as the 59p in Wilkinsons (there isn't a Wilkinison's round here is there?)

P.S. let me know how you get on with the oxtail. As I said in my OP, I would really LIKE to shop locally (although my postcode is Camberwell my nearest shops are Peckham by a narrow whisker) but I'm scared of those shops in Peckham :D I have been told by a poster on the London SE1 website that there's also a good butcher on Peckham Hill Street (near the Old Kent Road) but haven't yet been to investigate.

If you are in this the SE London area then you aren't too far from Penge - there is a wonderful shop called Penge Food Stores opposite Sainsbury....I know they have 5l of white vinegar for under £3 - I can't remember if it was £2.99 or £2.49. They also sell fresh bread, 4 for £1 pitta, various bargains of the moment four or three for £1 tins, BIG tins of olive oil, Wonderful jars of pickles, preserved peppers, very good olives, fruit and veg (some in cases) and have wonderful Halal Meat - very clean - the best legs of lamb we've eaten!!!!

Can't really recommend the rest of Penge ;) but Penge Foods are wonderful. I opted to do my 'christmas' shop there. No queues, great food, and plenty change from the £100+ it would have cost me in the supermarket (that included a £20 leg of lamb!)

There are some bargains to be had in Borough Market - you just have to look hard - one of the stalls sells Ham Hocks for £2.95 each - make great lentil oup, and his haslet is to die for!

    Regards

 but you can get a decent ham hock for £1.50 elsewhere

(speaking from personal experience, Blackheath Farmers' Market is one such place.)

THANKS for the vinegar tip-off though :)

Well I stand corrected - there aren't any butchers round here anymore only Halal ones and obviously.....

The Borough ones are rare breed..... Extra tasty legs :rotfl:

Katie, I am ALWAYS up for tips about Borough Market bargains :D I work just round the corner and am always there on a Friday. Let me know if you have any other recommendations - based on moneysaving, that is - if my food shopping was based on flavour alone I would buy up the whole market :D

:rotfl: Last Saturday I got assaulted with a cucumber at Lewisham Market :rotfl: (not like that, you filthy lot...) I was walking to the bus stop minding my own business and a woman came up behind me and whacked me on the hand with this big cucumber! It seemed she thought I'd dropped it and was trying to attract my attention - but honestly, there are more socially acceptable ways of doing this than smacking somebody with it! :rotfl:
