Bank gave me too much money...

This isnt your usual, theyve given me too much money than what ive asked for.

Basically i called into a Barclays branch to take some money out of my savings account to buy a car. Went in, asked for £1800 which they gave me and i walked out. Bought the car and off i went.

About half hour later i get a call saying they shouldnt have given me the money as i only had £400 in the account.

Called them back later and i told them id bought a car. Already signed the paperwork and handed over the money etc. She said she would inform her manager and get back to me.

She got back to me the next day and asked how long it would take to pay the money back, she started with days, then weeks. I said NO, absoloutly not, were looking at months. So back she went to her manager and now ive only been dealing with the manager herself. She has sent me out a means form to which ive now discussed this with her, and she has the details.

I recieved a letter from Head office Barclays saying i need to return my debit card. As they moved the debt from the savings account to my current account. (This isnt my main account btw) So now ill be incurring charges as im overdrawn AND my credit score will be bought down......

What the hell do i do??:(

How come you only had £400 and thought you had £1800+?

  • I didnt account for a couple of transactions
  • If the cashier had said id only had £400 in the account, that would have been fine and id never have bought the car. But she was busy chatting away to another customer and 2 other members of staff to be bothered. Now i feel that she has put me in debt cos now ive gotta try and find the money to be paid back.

Those couple of transactions must have been rather large to not account for. What would you like us to say?

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I'm sorry, bank made an error to give you that money, however the onus legally is on you to ensure you had the cleared funds to draw upon.
Unless you can agree a repayment plan (unlikely) they can charge you as an unauthorised overdraft.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

  • Well besides the point of me not knowing how much was in the bank. The cashier just went ahead and gave it to me. Now its her fault i have added debt. The account is a savings one, no internet access too. The only way is going to a bank. Is it not their responsiblilty to check whether i have funds?
  • They have gone away trying to set up a payment plan

Am sorry.. but its not the banks fault you are in debt.. its your fault for taking out money you did not have.. and i cant believe you had forgotten about the transactions.. its like a thousand plus pounds.. that is ridiculous.. looks like you will have to resell the car or accept the charges occured...sounds fishy to me..

I worked in Santander up until recently, on the counter. What would you like them to do when their systems go down and they can't check if the money is there, just not serve you at all? OK, I'm guessing the systems were working here (odd that the computer didn't prevent the cashier completing the transaction if this is the case though). My point is, though, it is down to you to ensure you know what your accounts are doing and so they're not obliged to do a thing. If you contact them, they'll probably try to arrange a payment plan, but my experience is they'll want to set this up over 9 months, perhaps 12 max so you'll be looking at £117-£156 per month.
