Tom had first met his best pal, a celebrated archaeologist from Sicily called Umberto, at Aix-la-Chapelle, when they excavated a site together which was believed to date from the time of Charlemagne. They had been friendly rivals ever since. Once, thinking it might amuse Umberto (and confident he was the better driver), Tom bought a couple of tickets for a track day at Silverstone. Although Umberto wasn’t all that keen to take part, he nonetheless took up the challenge when his friend goaded him saying, “Come on, Umberto, we’re doing this.” Unfortunately, Tom’s car vaulted the security tyres at the first corner, shot eleven metres into the air, and he cracked three ribs when it landed upside down. They haven’t spoken since.

The way puzzle 6 is laid out is interesting. Might it be organised this way so the numbers can be read differently?
The first 3 lines:
1-2-3
1-4-2
4-1-4
could easily be interpreted as 114, 241, 324 ie. I, F, R and then maybe even swapped/reversed like 411, 142, 423
...opens up a whole new way of looking for a solution.
Also, we are looking for a description of a character - not the name of a character so the words should be standard words (not ambigious names).0 -
Alas, I think there are a lot of different ways of looking at it, and feel a little deflated at how little progress I am making.
One last stint tonight, will post random thoughts, gathered thoughts, suggestions and anything else in the hope it allows one of us on here to take the prize!Like all revolutions, guerrilla goodness begins slowly, with a single act. Let it be yours.

i'm with everyone on this - i've looked at it in so many ways and getting nowhere.
I've tried to put clue four into 5 answers rather than 10 to mirror the 5 answers of all the other clues
(eg Palace Arch/
Chapel Museum/
etc)
but still not getting too far!
Giving it one more go, then I think thats it for me0 -
This puzzle is all Greek to me!0 -
The manuscript that the army engineer and scholar find is all Greek to them too.
Can't believe the answer will be a greek translation though - surely that is a twist too far?Like all revolutions, guerrilla goodness begins slowly, with a single act. Let it be yours.

Could it be......instead of 1.2.3 puzzle 1, line 2, 3rd letter..........reading downwards from the list 1.1.4 then 3.1.4, 2.3.1, 5.4.5, 2.4.1 etc. going down instead of a cross? I like to think I'm good at codes, but I think this would defeat even a master cryptographer!Celtigra:smileyhea0

That would give I T R L F U E O R R S I - but then some of the lines are long ie puzzles 1 and 5 and some are short so what happens to the other letters, it's leaving lots unused. Or maybe 1.2.3, etc. should be counted from the end of the line instead of the beginning?Celtigra:smileyhea0
