I know the feeling! Far too many chocs this year!
I made a soup yesterday which according to the recipe is only 65cals per portion! Was very flavoursome too. If I do say so myself :j
Roasted root vegetable soup! Think you can add pretty much whatever you fancy but I followed it religiously being a newbie in the kitchen!
Butternut squash, swede, carrot, parsnip, onion, leek, rosemary, bay, thyme.
Roast veggies for about 50 mins in some oil and the herbs.
Add to saucepan with couple pints of veggie stock, bring to boil
Simmer for 10 mins
Whizz through the blender and voila!
Give it a go!
The squash wasn't cheap but the rest was ok and I got loads out of it.Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...0 -
i did actually make soup yesterday... enough to feed an army if the truth were known all my xmas veg got thrown in and blitzed and it was delish:T i have portioned it out into tubs and frozen so i have enough to keep me going for a year or two at least  i think i`d best stick to soup for lunch and find something low cal that i can feed the family on for the evening meal because i really cant be bothered to cook 2 different meals for us every night.proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0

Do you have a slowcooker? I put together a beef stew in mine today that was low fat and very tasty : lean stewing beef, carrots, parsnip, broad beans, leek, mushrooms, red pepper, water and a beef oxo cube, herbs. Tasted deeelish, and low fat/low cal (didn't even need potatoes)Save the earth, it's the only planet with chocolate!0

Hi and happy new year.
First thing to know is that all vegetables are very low cal, so find those you like and don't cost too much and have plenty of them in any ways, salads, soup in stews etc. You shall also drink plenty of water and eat some fruit.
Lean protein that don't cost too much are cottage cheese, frozen fish fillets, chicken or turkey.
I cook fish fillets without fat using just a little vegetable stock and herbs (like rosemary and sage) or with a tomato sauce also made without fat (cook onion and garlic with a little stock or water, add some canned tomatoes and reduce at low heat, then add all the herbs I like and some capers, and finally the fish fillets and simmer until they are done).
With the same system you can cook meat (like sliced chicken or turkey breast) without much effort and it won't taste like diet.
You can have also pasta, rice and pulses, but you shall be careful with the quantities and avoid to add fat in the sauce.0 -
If you are not already sick of it, turkey is very low fat and can be used in stir fries in the same way you would use chicken - its cheaper too!!!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

add tins of beans( butter, kidney, cannellini, chick peas...) to soups, salads, stews to add protein, fibre and fill you up.
or whizz them up into bea dips.
Plus they're cheap.
make lentil dahl, eat brown rice and porridge.
all good sustaining nosh0 -
no fat soup is a life saver (I need to lose 2 stone before June), and you can easily make it more filling for him by adding pulses and meat. I make a fat free chunky winter veg soup and add chopped cooked bacon or that smoked pork sausage and it's really tasty.
I make my mince-based meals (e.g. chilli, spag bol and cottage pie) half beef mince and half quorn mince and my hubby has never said anything. I don't think you can really tell. Also, add loads of vegetables to things like spag bol so that there is more veg than meat.
I really need to get my portions under control as I eat the same size meal as my 6ft, 16 stone hubby and I'm 5ft 4! I'm also going to stop drinking for Jan as wine is lilke liquid cream cakes!
I have stopped making creamy sauces and using cheese (except parmesan, cottage cheese and low fat mozzarella) in cooking.
We drink skimmed milk, use low fat spread and don't really fry anything - all these things are easy to use and you get used to them very quickly.
I am about to try a bloody type diet which according to my blood type (B) I should avoid chicken, pork/bacon/ham, chick peas and lentils, tomatoes, sweetcorn and wheat. These ingredients are all quite staple in my diet so it is going to involve a real shift in thinking. I might not even make it!
Good luck and hopefully your hubby will not notice the change...0 -
The easiest 'non diet' I've lost weight on is a programme from Weight Watchers. (Although I've never paid a penny to them in my life
)
The basic principal is to eat healthily, not on a diet, so you are far less likely to 'stop' the diet and pile the pounds on again.
It's really very simple. Cook with lean, fresh, wholesome ingredients. Eat fruit instead of snacking and allow yourself a couple of treats. My treat is a bottle of wine at the weekend. I never feel I'm on a 'diet' except for when I have a choccy craving and have to choose between that and the wine.
I don't weigh any food, just eat until I am full instead of stuffed. The portion sizes seem to come down naturally.
Examples of easy food would be Spag bog made with very little oil, lean mince and lots of veggies. Shepherds pie made the same. Pretty much any meat/fish and 2 veg meals. Pasta with tomato based sauces. Veggy lasagna made with ricotta cheese instead of traditional white sauce. Rice dishes - jumbalaya, risotto etc can all be adapted to be lower fat so hubby won't notice. Even curries can be made healthier - it's just a case of adapting how you cook and with what ingredients.
Good luck! :j :jNew year, no debt! Debt free date - 02/01/07 :j :j :j0 -

I know it might sound like a "yeah, right!" thing, but I promise you it's not. It really does work. (I lost three stone following the WeightWatchers principles. I didn't go to the meetings or anything, maybe I'd have lost it quicker if I had!)0
