If it is a jar with a metal lid, heat up the metal (put it in the sink and pour boiling water on it perhaps), metal expands, jar should be easier to open.

Whenever I have a jar with a lid that I cannot open I just tap the edge of the lid (gently) on any concrete object. The front door step seems to work best however I have also used the house interior walls.

I use a wooden rolling pin to gently tap around the lid - always works for me0
