Pickled Cabbage Vent (seriously!!)

I'm laughing as i type this but it seriously naffed me off at the time.

Popped down to the local corner shop for a jar of pickled cabbage to go with some leftover hotpot a friend had brought round for me. Got it home, and could I get the lid off the jar? Not a chance in hell!

My son (who has hands like shovels and can usually open anything) tried, his girlfriend tried, the builder over the road tried, the kleeneze man tried (then proceeded to try and flog me a jar opener which would have been fantastic if he had one in his !!!!! pocket at the time)

Admitting defeat I popped back to the shop, explaining my problem, and asking if i could exchange it for another jar.

The assistant behind the till tried, the assistant manager tried, the post master tried. All admitted defeat. The assistant agreed I could change it for another one no problem (we were all laughing about it at this point). The actual manager was lurking behind the till and asked what the problem was. We explained to him. He then refused to allow me to change the product as there was nothing wrong with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was that shocked I laughed and walked out of the shop with my un-openable pickled cabbage.

It is now sat next to me, taunting me, mocking me, if it had a mouth I would even say it was grinning at me.

So if there is anyone in the Blackpool area who thinks they could open my satanic jar of picked cabbage, I will gladly share my hotpot with them.

Have you tried sliding a butter knife under the rim of the lid and levering upwards so the bubble at the centre pops up, then opening normally? I have had a similar problem and that's what solved it. But be careful when doing this.

Tried that....all i suceeded in doing was bending my knife. I've tried running it under hot water, banging it on the counter top (no idea why but my dad used to do that)

I'm thinking of taking it down to the local garage and asking if they have any air tools they could use to open it with.

The easiest thing to do would be buy another jar but I am NOT letting this beat me now on principle!!! LOL oh god i'm still laughing.:rotfl:

I'd have asked him to prove that there is nothing wrong with it by opening it then and there. If he can't open it, then by definition there must be something wrong with it as it is currently an ornament and not a jar of pickled cabbage.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

OMG LMAO!!!....I'm now as we speak placing this jar on my mantlepiece. I might even put a tea light on top of it just to complete my new ornament.

You could use a knife or hammer a nail through the lid to release the vacuum, carefully though.
  • We always tap the edge of the lid on the worktop and it always works---maybe run it under the hot tap first and then tap it on the worktop-then wear a pair of rubber gloves and try it. Rubber gloves give a lot extra grip--good luck!
I might be crazy but I'm not stupid....

i always use rubber gloves to open such things!
Passing on my wisdom means there will be more stupid people in the world.:rotfl:

    that should do it :)

I keep a very strong, sharp, short-bladed knife for stabbing reluctant jar lids
  • Stanley knife through the lid...worked a treat!!!!

Unfortunately the lid came off with such a POP, I dropped the whole thing on the floor of the garage and i now need a new jar of pickled cabbage...LOL

Thank you for all the ideas though :)
