i think the only thing network comapanies can do is have set rates (same across all networks ) or automaticlaly turn of roaming once phone leaves countryReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. As the person who posted originally, I just want to say thanks to all those who've offered HELPFUL advice; to those who've used it as a place to achieve some weird sense of superiority, get a life! You might be interested to know that MPs are being inundated with complaints about these charges (yes, yes, I know - incurred by morons, blah blah) and one MP is trying to get some legislation on the books to offer greater protection to the consumer.
Translated:- " All of you who agree with me, you are great guys. Those of you who think I am in any way to blame, may the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse descend upon you and yours"0 -
It doesn't. If the phone is switched off it cannot receive data in any way.
My OH has an HTC desire and likes to use its camera plus contact details when going abroad. I just tell her to put it in airplane mode for the whole duration of the trip. Means she won't get any messages, calls or have internet access, but she takes it out of airplane mode when back in the UK and catches up with what she's missed.
This.
I do this on every holiday as does my wife.
At the end of the day it is not the responsibility of the network to ensure you have turned roaming off or put the phone into plane mode.0 -
The guy on page 1 got it right - don't take your phone on holiday with you. You'll survive.
But if you do have to take it then it's your responsibility, simple as that. You've signed up to a contract/direct debit so its up to you to read the smallprint. You wouldn't just call people indiscriminately and think it's included in your inclusive allowance so why do it with the internet. As with many things in life, ignorance is not an excuse.
Quite why people need the internet in their pocket and apps 24/7 is beyond me. How sweet that many are getting their comeuppance.0 -

So do you really think that China Telecom are going to be happy to charge their tens of millons of customers the same amount as Vodafone etc charge in the UK? I don't think so.
And vice versa?
And you'd still be roaming, so what impact would it have anyway? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

OK, so you are wanting to remove any competition between rival networks in the fastest growing sector of the telecoms market. How would that benefit the customer? No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I smell something here ...
Someone is working for a mobile phone network at least, for Orange at best .....
A grand for roaming is ridiculous .....0 -

I don't bother with the internet on holiday but quite why anyone would gloat that was sweet and somehow deserving of comeuppance is beyond me.Mortgage When Started in Dec 2006 = £160,699
Amount owing in Jun 11 = £128,400
Mortgage Free Date =Dec 2026 :eek:0 -
