Seems like only sm @rt asses should be allowed to use smartphones judging by some of the replies in this thread. :D

And I can't wait until the day comes that the likes of Orange make you take your test on a mobile before they let you give them your money. Shame it's never going to happen though.

No. It's lazy can't-be-bothered-to-read-about-anything asses that shouldn't be allowed to use them, or, if they do, they should be banned from wingeing about large roaming bills.

You don't need to be a smart !!! to be aware of smartphones using data and roaming data costing money.

Switching your data roaming on and off has got nothing to do with signing a contract.
True, and there may be some cases where it's a billing mistake, but by and large the end user has enabled roaming and then does not check what is being used. Most phones have it disabled by default and a notice saying it's expensive when you activate it. Heres a snap shot from an Iphone

Can't pot an image Dunno why see http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=45442094&postcount=10

How much clearer dows it need to be? I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic here, I really do not understand why people do not heed the message and then wonder why they get such a large bill.

Hi, why is it that some people won't take responsibility for their own actions.

If they don't read their manual or check up on roaming costs then its their own 'cant be bothered' fault.

It's the 'Sorry Guv ,I didnt know about that ,so why should I pay for it ' attitude.

Well, every pound the networks have to write off because of people like this, pushes up prices and ends up costing all of us extra.

Stand up and be counted, act like a man and pay your debts.

Whilst I agree with your closing comment inasmuch as people who have used a lot of data traffic should pay for it, it's not just a case of reading the manual. I have yet to see a manual that says "if you use this phone abroad in its default settings, you run the risk of it costing you a fortune."
Data roaming is such a new concept to many mobile phone owners that they can't grasp the fact that its using up airtime at a price. Especially where they're on a contract with bundled, effectively unlimited use, so they don't see any direct cost at all due to their online activities in this country.

I agree to a point, although in fairness, I feel the majority of 'claims' are from those trying it on, in this case the OP not only manages to strike a large bill , but lose £3400 of luggage on holiday (not sure if it's the same trip) and complaining that the insurance won't pay up because there are no reciepts to substaniate the claim. Many plead ignorance as a defence yet they know exactly where to come to to complain about their episode :o

Leaving aside details of this case SMS is not a guaranteed service, Think about new years eve every year when texts get delayed and sometimes lost in the system, and thats in the same country. Texts aare usually valid for 3 days, if the phone does not "check in" the text may never be recieved or if there is a delay between it getting across networks it may expire before it get to the phone

They could be sent by the home network, but never arrive for all sorts of reasons out of the networks control.

Coming back to the OP Turkey is not classed as EU for data roaming and the warning text, and cap, do not apply.

The relevance being, there's supposed to be a data roaming cap within the EU. Unless I'm reading those articles wrong.
