Do people fly on aeroplanes because they like going to airports, or do they go to airports because they want to travel? For some reason many EU airports seem to think they call the shots over the airlines (and passengers) with the delusion that they are in the shopping mall business and not (as they should be) in the transport business, especially in the UK.

Perhaps because in the 1980s the government of the day decided that all airports had to be run as commercial operations and not as government/local authority subsidised facilities. All airports were privatised - for example the British Airports Authority was floated. I'm not saying its right - but thats how it is.

All airports here are commercial operations, either Ltd companies or part of larger, often foreign, companies. Theye exist to make money. Over the last 10 years revenues from landing fees has been in freefall, and as such the airports have had to re-prioritise, or find other revenue streams. Again, I'm not saying any of this is right, but its how it is.

I really don't see any of the big problem with the subject of this thread. At some airports, passengers are allowed to take an extra carrier bag in addition to their one piece of baggage. Its no big deal, a lot of passengers probably like it, and its hardly an "attack" on any airline.

    Yes, I can confirm this.

I saw the signs, (you couldn't miss them). I also saw a women with a huge holdall and at least 4 overflowing carrier bags trying to board a Ryanair flight to Belfast. I heard the check in staff tell her she is only allowed one carrier bags if it was stuff bought at the airport.

Surprisingly, after she struggled in vain for 10 minutes to get the rest of the carrier bag in her already oversized handluggage, they just let her on with the lot.

Liverpool airport definately allows a bag of duty free along with your 1 piece of hand luggage.
They have a massive Ryanair sign saying this in the departure area.
This was when we went through there 4 weeks ago (feels like longer!)

Just phoned the UK number for Ryanair and the women I spoke to and her supervisor knew nothing about this and said it was not allowed. I said that at some sirports (Liverpool, Bristol and East Midlands) there were even signs with Ryanair being specifically mentioned. At this point she said that 'maybe head office had not told them' about this policy, are they trying to keep quite about it?
