Should I download Avast now whilst I have AVG on ? Then delete AVG.
Do I just click the free version for home users?

Use the AVG removal tool to remove it properly. Then download Avast or Avira. Whichever is best.

    Filehippo is a good site.

avast has always been lighter, and no annoying popups (which use ram)

I may switch then. The pop-ups are annoying.

I have installed Hi jack this, but it comes up with an error saying it's not fully installed or something.
It says to go to start, then run and type in windows\system32\drivers etc etc
But I can't even find where it says run.
I'm on windows 7. I can find start button of course, but once I click that, I can't find anywhere it says run.
It won't let me install Avast, comes up with errors and I'm all in a mess.

You've done a quick scan - you need to do a Full Scan because you obviously have something that a quick scan did not reveal. It can take some considerable time, depending on how full your hard disc is.
