Avast is free and OK. Avira is also free and I've found that it's better for not-very-good PCs (a bit "lighter").

Free ones have no real-time protection though so you have to scan regularly (I think).

Google Goored (as in google redirect). There's a fix that you can download.

I used tdskiller and then gooredfix and it stopped this problem.

I have an old PC (512MB RAM) and found it the lighter. Searches on reviews said it was also. This was about a year ago, it could be different now. Avira is also easy to use. Don't know about Avast.

Just did the scan and it came up with no threats.
Would anybody recommend deleting Mozilla firefox and reinstalling?

Should I download Avast now whilst I have AVG on ? Then delete AVG.
Do I just click the free version for home users?

avast has always been lighter, and no annoying popups (which use ram)

OP, until you post the hijackthis log, we are working in the dark, you can uninstall firefox (after backing up bookmarks) if you like, if it isn't affecting IE

download avast 6 free, uninstall avg, install avast, register avast.
