  • I haven't heard anything from argos yet, i did attend the group interview though.
It turns out my mum uses the benifits to pay rent & for my education but things are getting tight so this is why i need a job.

    I was thinking about these online jobs;
    - proof reading
    - Advertising facebook pages/links
    - Write reviews
    - Type up home work for others (Not change to get them better grades, just type it exactly as it is)
    - Advertise products (a little like advertising facebook)

Sorry, most of those are totally unrealistic.

(I also don't mean to keep hammering the same point but surely it's because your mother isn't paying for your education that you feel you need to get a job?)

What experience have you got in any of these, especially proof-reading? Most jobs of that kind that I've seen advertised require someone with an English language degree and some experience.

Write reviews for what? That market is saturated, as far as I know.

I don't see why cash-strapped student would pay for something to be typed up when they can do that themselves. Most people I know worked on the computer anyway, only using paper and pen for note-taking.

Fair play for trying to think out of the box a little, I just don't think it is realistic. I also don't think any of those pay particularly well either.

without wishing to dent your enthusiasm in any way at all - I doubt very much that your grasp of the English language is good enough to get you a job proof reading.

It is a very specialised area and judging from some of your posts, I don't think you have experience to proof read or write reviews to a high enough standard.

Your mother needs to claim housing benefit, otherwise what happens when she looses your CTC and CB.

CTC and CB get paid until 19 if the child is in full-time education, if she's only 17 the parents have 2 more years yet to worry about that.

OP - If your family is on a very low income then the college will help out, there are hardship funds available and although EMA has been abolished schools/colleges have discretionary funds to give the low income students a weekly amount in a similar way to EMA, you need to ask about this as any income you have will take the pressure off the family as a whole.

There's obviously only a few weeks left now until your course starts but how about a car boot/table top sale. I bet there's loads of stuff in your bedroom that you no longer need, CDs, DVDs, games, old toys, clothes etc. Would your parents allow you to boot sale some of their old stuff too, just to pay for the essentials and if there's more money than you need they could have it.

I think the 'online' money making schemes you've talked about will bring in very little income, most of the review websites pay just pennies per review so you would be looking at around 1000-2000 reviews just to raise your £200. Ditto with the advertising, it's very time consuming and pays very little, if you need the money quick I wouldn't suggest either of these avenues.

Can you make stuff? Handmade cards/jewellery?

I hope it all works out for you!

Selling is a good idea to make some money when time is running out; I did this last year at a car boot sale and made a bit. Looking to do it again with some things around the house that I won't put on ebay to boost my masters fund.

Keep looking and trying in terms of a part time job, come September a lot of retailers will start advertising for christmas vacancies with some likely to keep some staff on after this period. At least that will get you some extra money whilst you do your course.

    Good Luck!

  • I didn't get the job at argos. Me & my boyfriend are hoping to do a carboot sale next week.
I'm also going to try and put up a notice or something for odd jobs in church.

I'm planning on creating some cards to sell, and I also have some artwork I can try and flog.

You might notice that I suggested very early on that babysitting was the most viable option for someone who's 17 and wants to study childcare and I still can't see any better option for her.
Me neither, and I say that as a mum of 2, especially if her area is anything like mine where for some bizarre reason holiday playschemes aren't running for the last week of the school hols and employers are putting pressure on you to be on hand at work at short notice considering how much AL you've recently been using. Twice this summer I've knocked on the door of a local teenager (where I knew teenager's mum) asking if they'd be interested in earning a babysitting fee for watching my 8yo whilst I attend a meeting or to take her to x, so I can get to work on time. On both occassions they bit my hand off. :D I wouldn't use a stranger though, but if I knew of you - eg you lived locally, I knew your parents or church leader I'd be interested. Put word out you're looking.

I'm not allowed to baby sit - my mum wouldn't allow it. I've talked to her about it and she was like "don't be silly get a proper job" And she doesnt trust me
