Massive orange phone bill

My manager in work has just received a bill for his daughters mobile phone for almost £400. She too had been to Turkey. He spoke to a customer service adviser who informed him that his daughter hadn't used the internet at all & it was simply data roaming charges as she was on a blackberry. Thats disgusting! How can these companies get away with this?? And why is it predominantly Orange doing it??COMP WINS FOR HUBBY & I SINCE SEPTEMBER:2 £50 DOMINOS VOUCHERS, 13 PAIRS OF FOOTBALL TICKETS, MICROSOFT HOME EDTN, 2 PAIRS OF ALTON TOWERS TICKETS, 1 CASE OF PERCY PIGS, 1 PAIR OF LEATHER LADIES GLOVES, 4 COLLECTION 2000 PRODUCTS, PLAYSTATION 3 WITH FIFA 12, 5* HOTEL STAY IN LONDON, SEASON 6 OF SUPERNATURAL DVD, PERFECT PIZZA VOUCHER0

Just turn mobile data off entirely, then the phone can't use any mobile data at all, simples. iPhones have this option, I would hope other smartphones do too. I don't understand why people choose to leave their phone connected to the data network when they go abroad if they don't want to be charged for the data use.0

I agree.
I think there are a variety of issues though.
People don't understand how there phones work. You hear things like 'I turned off Data Roaming but was still charged even though I only went on facebook and email'. They don't understand that to do that they had switched Data Roaming back on.
People don't read instructions, sticky threads, terms and conditions or even the warnings on their handsets. Or if they do they don't take the trouble to make sure they understand it.
People want rights but don't understand responsibilities.
People have no idea of economics of roaming, so they can't make a proper judgement as to whether its regulated, a fair market price or vastly overpriced.
Its difficult to know what to do, there are very many sources of information about roaming and yet people don't use them or ignore them.
When you add in the 'broken' customer service of companies like Orange, its no wonder we see these threads.0 -
OTF = Orange San Francisco. For peoples reference.Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug).0

Just to update this, I composed an email for him, which he sent & today he got £219 knocked off the bill. Not a bad outcome looking at some of the amounts offered to people on this thread.COMP WINS FOR HUBBY & I SINCE SEPTEMBER:2 £50 DOMINOS VOUCHERS, 13 PAIRS OF FOOTBALL TICKETS, MICROSOFT HOME EDTN, 2 PAIRS OF ALTON TOWERS TICKETS, 1 CASE OF PERCY PIGS, 1 PAIR OF LEATHER LADIES GLOVES, 4 COLLECTION 2000 PRODUCTS, PLAYSTATION 3 WITH FIFA 12, 5* HOTEL STAY IN LONDON, SEASON 6 OF SUPERNATURAL DVD, PERFECT PIZZA VOUCHER0
