  • Both my children have Blackberries but when they go abroad I make them take our "emergency phone". Its not new or flashy and is pay as you go. I think because it isn't "trendy" they don't use it unless they really have to due to the embarrassment! :)

I feel phone operators should impose say a £5 per day data cap, or even £0 cap, for roaming outise of the UK unless the cap is asked to be lifted. It seems odd you have to get pernmission to use the phone outside of the UK but get no real warning about rip-off data charges.

You're not using your home network remember, your network only get the billing info send from the roaming network once every 24 to 48 hours.

The cost is based on what the roaming network want to change, not what the home network charges. Some oversea's networks look on it as a cash cow and change as much as they can.

    I very much doubt this.

they do manage to have billing information in real time for PAYG phones, why should contract phones be different?

as for the charges, I think the home network is more to blame than the overseas network. they set the charges and not the overseas network.

PAYG *HAS* to do credit control, contract doesn't, to re-write and update the entire billing system, and the inherant risk in that, is not something any network would do.

Combinaiton of both, the charges set are to cover the charges by the foreign networks, and they'll set them to cover those costs, they don't just pick the highest number they can think of (although it may seem that way)

Well, I only work for one of the networks, but you're entitled to your view.

Pay as you go works on a totally different system (CAMEL). It's very unreliable and can't handle very many roamers. There's no way it could be extended for contract customers.
Also a lot of networks don't support it due to the cost of installing the hardware, which is why you can't use payg in some area's

The home network doesn't set the cost, the roaming network is free to set (within a few bounds) what they like, like any other service. If you book into a hotel you don't tell them what you want to pay, they tell you what they charge. Just the same. . .
  • I have a massive orange phonebill which i can only pay in monthly installments which will take around 13 months to pay off. I have been told my phone will not be useable until i pay the full amount. Any options on what i can do

You've already said that Orange have given you a discount off the bill, therefore you need to pay the remainder.
Do you really think that Orange are stupid enough to let you chalk up more debt with them by reinstating your account, until you've paid the money that you owe?
  • Does anyone read the website or booklet they get with there sim card when they first get it? My friend is going to Malta and Tuesday and after reading 3 website yesterday I told him not to check his facebook at all whilst he was away as he would use all of his payg balance in one go. So maybe people should read there networks website once in a while!
