Fortunately, I am in pretty good health, I've been off sick for 2 days in 5 years, so I should be ok. I don't know what will happen if something unexpected happens and I cannot do it
, probably he'll get one of my team members to work a silly shift?
Exactly - he would do something because he had to.
Why is this person manager but has nothing to do with what you do?
He is getting paid to manage so make him manage...If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -

At the head office, yes, but we don't have any regular contact, or any contact at all. I rely on my manager, when I see him, for advice, or on the intranet section.0 -

don't get me on that, he won't do anything because he doesn't know the business, we had 3 weeks in january with 3 members of the staff including me to manage the 24 h, when I've asked for help he shouted at me telling me it's my job to manage the rota, and not to come to him for help as it won't happen.0 -

But it isn't your job to manage the rota if you have no say in getting agency/extra staff in.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
People will tell you to get them told, and make them do their job, but they'll never understand that it can't be done, so i feel for you on this one as i know what the feeling is like
Perhaps, if you don't have the resolve to take them on.
If you're assertive, articulate and persistent, there are mechanisms to apply to change the status-quo. I do accept though that you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -

Dealing with the other side of the business, I cannot explain it, but he's always at the other place (which is in the building next door). Don't ask me what he does as I barely see him!

op seems to me you posted this not because you were worried about the lady off ill but because like your struggling not just with people of sick but overall because im guessing your tired cause your working silly shifts and do most of the work plus from things youve said your staff arent motivated by you
you need a break or youll burn out is it possible you can find someone who can take some of the strain of you if only for a few daysReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. Perhaps you need to raise some of these issues with HR - see what can be agreed on to get shift cover when there is sickness so that it doesn't always fall to you, get yourself some training/guidelines on how to deal with sickness issues and performance issues and general managerial skills, as a 'manager' who is expected to be responsible for these tasks you should have the skills and training to carry them out. if you don't do something one of two things will happen, you will end up with stress or make sure self ill, or the company will end up fighting tribunal cases from disgruntled employees who believe that they have been treated unfairly etc and believe me it will be your fault as your boss doesnt seem to care too much.... if HR wont help then maybe it is time to look for a new job (hard in these times I know) as no job is worth being treated in this wayDont wait for your boat to come in 'Swim out and meet the bloody thing'
