Thanks for the suggestion but I am not going that far! I do not do home visits, or bother her for the weekend, will give her a call on Monday and see if she's fit enough to come to work.

I wasn't making the suggestion. I was pointing out that the person who *did* suggest it was making a ludicrous point.

my works policy is that unless theres a sick note to cover an illness the employee must ring in first thing in the morning , if the person in question is saying her doctor recommends she is off it should be easy for her to get a sick note .

she has no need to get any sick note within the first 7 days

We also have a small team, yet we've had 2 men go in the space of a week. One for 2 week, the other for 3 months. Both on the sick.

We have to simply manage. What about agency workers? We've had to call on these in the past.
If she says she's sick, then she's sick until you can prove otherwise.

We had a guy who kept calling in sick. We all KNEW he was winging it, but nobody could provide the hard evidence required to do anything about it so it had to be dropped.

She's called you, she's made contact so what else are you wanting?

    I've just remembered ....

You're not a doctor. My employees tried to play the doctor when i was signed off with work related stress. They sent me a letter saying i had shown no signs of it & they were refusing to pay me SSP.

To cut the story short, my union sent them a letter basically telling them that they are not doctors & unless they want to go through the solicitors, they best pay me my dues.

A few days later i had £700 worth of sick pay in my hand.

you werent employed by Royal Mail were you?
seems every line manager gets a medical doctorate as part of their contract.

We're not allowed to have any agency workers and the manager doesn't tuck in at all, so it is down to a team of 3 to cover the 24 h business, we're 5 in total, one in holiday and one off sick, it's just happening sooo often that 2 members of staff call in sick when someone else is off, make it even harder ... and it's obviously down to me to cover as the others are most of the time unavailable( which you can't blame, if they made plans). So it's me ending up working 60 odd hours a week, which I do not want to. But this is a different matter, yes, maybe the morale is low in the work place, but I am really trying my best to make fair for everyone

According to our policy, the employee is required to keep in touch, but also we can make regular contact so we can check on the recovery or offer any assistance.

She had been in touch. She called you at 4pm. You then calling her at 7pm and demanding she be woken up when told she is in bed sick is a little too regular don't you think?

Seems to me you are coming up with one story after another to try and justify your first mistake.

Purcel - step back from the phone.

Consult your sickness management procedure and stick to it like glue.

You sound like you don't actually know how to manage people to be honest; I see you didn't respond to my last post about whether you were trained in sickness management or not....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Dealing with the other side of the business, I cannot explain it, but he's always at the other place (which is in the building next door). Don't ask me what he does as I barely see him!
