OP- in your situation, I'd explain to the fitter that I was hoping to purchase the units on a credit card to spread the cost, but state that I understand it's only right that he should make a bit on the units himself - would he be happy for you to go to the store with him, pay the bill and then give him the Mark up separately.
Assuming of course that you have a good relationship with the fitter. If he thinks you're just being tight, or assuming he's put to scam you, he probably will take offence.
This is what I do with my decorator, plumber and carpet fitter if I want to use my credit card. However, if I'm not bothered, I trust them not to rip me off on price, and they never have!0
