hey penny - No buyer protection doesn't stop credit card chargebacks - Buyer protection only means paypal will honour disputes.
Paypal get burdened with the CC chargebacks themselves.
Hence me being dubious of paypal actually letting the seller getting any funds after a dispute or two has been opened.

Yea... but I don't think it's the fact that payments were or weren't funded by CC that matters.
I think Paypal have a set of prcedures that are easily triggered to freeze accounts (and there liability to CC chargebacks is what determines their ruthless implementation of these procedures).
If you have a look at paypalsucks.com and various posts over the last couple of years on here of innocent (well relatively) ebayers paypal accounts being frozen often for months. You get a picture of how paypals security sytems work and the majority of the frauds that are flagged on here I don't think in general are sucessful.
We get all het up about them but I don't think anyones proffiting to any significant degree.
Undoubtedly there are holes in paypals procedures (which you can work out) but the ones that are discussed on here don't utilise them. So I don't think we should all be so antagonised by them - cos noones getting rich.

The ones on here that we should be more concerned with are those that involve offers to buy outside ebay via bank transfer which are pretty regular and from all accounts the police don't seem to want to know.
  • In summary - having read the entire thread (sad, I know!) it seems that:

    a) the buyer was a bit naive/tired/in a rush/stupid/other to have bid for an image
    b) the seller set out to deceive by choosing the console listing and indicating it was a Nintendo Wii in the title but only having one word "image" to indicate that is what was actually being bid on. The mis-categorisation breaks ebays rules. He or she has also had subsequent auctions reported and removed (probably thanks to the sharp eyed eagles here!)
    c) from the standard of English (mis-)used, the seller is either the seller's child or relation OR ... given the account has a good previous rating, it is highly possible it has been hijacked by a foreign party. Hmmm wonder which one of common passwords such as "password" or "12345" the original owner used, or if they were caught by the usual batch of Christmas keylogger virii out there...

This just seems to be another one of those many listings that rely on people not reading/missing very important words....stupid I know, but then who hasn't made a mistake before.....

To all intents and purposes they dilberately put this auction under the wrong catagory - same as the ones that list all the specs and list under the 'mobile phone' catagory...then in teeny tiny writing....'this is a dummy phone'.

Laura - I can see what you are saying...but have to disagree. What they are doing is underhand and devious. And let's face it....that's not the typical demographic of who runs these auctions, is it!?
