What do I need to do to become a web designer?

this thread is pretty epic!
mac's aren't good for all design work btw (after working in an office exclusively using mac, which turned to windows in a very short period of time) but that doesn't have a lot to do with the op wanting to be a web designer!
as jccarlos says getting knowledge of all the aspects/language used in designing a website is far more important than what machine you write it on.
I have experienced two different types of web deisgner in the past, ones that are all about the look and feel of the site and others that are all about the functionality, both are not mutually exclusive but they seem to be with freelancers!
