Anyone recommend a new ISP?

I definitely wouldn't go to Sky. The broadband is very poor compared to my old Virgin cable connection0

You can't compare Sky ADSL with Virgin fibre they're two different technologys, try Sky and Virgin media ADSL for comparison.jeff_jared wrote: »I definitely wouldn't go to Sky. The broadband is very poor compared to my old Virgin cable connection
Sky LLU good Sky Connect rubbish.
For me Sky has been good,20763/1043,not the best connection I've had with an ISP but for the price it's good value.0 -
Sorry, I wasn't comparing fibre optic to my sky broadband. I was just comparing the regular upto 20MB boradband Sky package. Whilst I admit that speeds can vary depending on location, their broadband doesn't compare to the Virgin cable I had installed 2 years ago. Sky continually drops, and don't even talk about streaming/ downloading movies!!0

That will be the same with any ADSL service provider jeff.
I had to tolerate it for years dropouts measured by the hundred a day due to the aluminium 6km line length.
On a good day ADSL2 (LLU) 1.7meg down, normal ADSL less than 1 meg.
O2 packages have gone down the pan this year, avoid.
Best bet O2 own BE go with them.
Every ISP has its own criteria, very few do not throttle (meaning ALL ISP), sorry Traffic Shape, read the fine print often hidden on FUP.
Thats only a small sample of service providers on that Rochdale exchange, there are hundreds of specialist companies who ffer exceptional service but have to pay for it.
Or in other words pay cheap prices, expect poor performance and service.0 -
I'm with SKy and find them great. Customer service is excellent and you usually get someone who speaks english as a first language. Sky do not throttle or traffic shape, so thats a bonus if you like torrents and that shabazzle.
I used to be with Virgin fibre optic and I'm actually happier with Sky.
I used to work as a Sky BB tech agent... so I had lowered expectations of Sky bb, but was forced to have it (no FO in my street) and I'm pleased.
Sky TV is also better 0 My V+ box would always crash, yet the Sky+ box never does
+net bb is quite good, however, they actively throttle your speed on certain protocols if you dont pay extra; if you do pay extra, they will proritise your traffic, which is good.0 -

I have no issues. I came from Plusnet and Sky is maxing out my connection no matter what time of day and day of week.0 -
I'd recommend Plusnet. For £11.49 a month (or £23.48 if you took their line rental), you can get 60GB usage, with downloads between 12AM and 8AM not counting against your allowance. They do give upto 24Mbps depending on your distance from the exchange. I've used Plusnet at my old house and now again in the new place (two different towns), and both times, their initial speed estimate has been pretty good.0

Virgin is normley the best but not not every one lives in a cabled area.
Sky and virgin are the only ones who offer truly unlimted if you think you will download a lot all the others have fair usage policy.0 -

Really? So you've never heard of BE then?
Yes, they technically have a FUP. But the ONLY people who have EVER been pulled up are those whose connections have been used for sending SPAM emails. NOBODY has been pulled up about the amount they download/upload.
Plus they DO NOT throttle or limit ANY protocol type, regardless of time of day. (Sky and Virgin DO). Thus BE are more "unlimited" than Sky or Virgin.
