My old mum (born in the 1920s) got her driving licence during WW2 when driving tests were suspended.
But many people have exchanged an Irish driving licence for a UK one - never having sat a test either.
Ireland didn't have driving tests until March 1964.
Then in the 1980s they gave an unknown number of provisional licence holders a full licence as a means of clearing the backlog of people waiting for a test.0 -
I have just realised that my photo licence is out of date as I wasnt aware of the rule. I tried to update my detail on line but DVLA website can't link me to my old address - any idea what i can do?0

I just got the reminder letter today. I have a couple of questions that I can't find the answer for online, so I'm wondering if anyone here can help.
I don't own a car, but I do hire cars a lot for work, so I have to produce my licence often at car hire firms. I have two questions:
-- Do you have to send in your old photocard while waiting for the new one to arrive if you apply online?
-- How long does it take them to send you a new photocard if you apply online?
I noted the other person's comments about them not adding on extra time like with the passport. Although the cost has come down to £14, I'd still rather have it for the longest validity (although a couple of months over ten years is possibly venturing into hair-splitting territory ...).
Thanks!0 -

Hi everyone,
I've never been able to get an actual answer from the DVLA on this. I have a short licence (have to renew every 3 years) for medical reasons. Every 3 years the DVLA send me an application form, my doctor signs it, and for no fee a nice shiny new licence drops through my door with a new expiry date on it.
However my concern is that I've done this a few times now and have never been asked for a new photo! So my licence photo is now about 15 years old.
Does anyone know if I need to renew my photo if the licence expiry date (4b) is in date?
Many thanks.0 -
Well I am unimpressed, I turn 70 in mid June - licence expires 10th April 2017, receive reminder dated 13th February and without thinking went online and renewed at the cost of £14.00
Received new licence valid until mid June when I will have to apply again !!
If I had waited until closer to my expiry date then I would have been in the 90 day free renewal period. Do I feel a little ripped off or what.
Any one else due to renew and close to 70 please note.
Edit: well thinking about it I suppose my licence would run out 10th April, if over 70's starts mid June that's 2+months without a licence !! but £14 for 2+months, think they could do better.0 -
I coached my new manager to check & remind folk about the date on the driving licence card & promptly got caught three years out. Ahem.
My travel claim is now on hold til the lovely lady at the post office gets my new licence card sent through. (Blimey their cube is potent medicine - backdrop, camera, signature plate and biometrics scanner all in one place!) For the peace of mind thus granted? Absolutely worth the extra fee.0
