I recently hired a car in Canada. Because I only have a paper licence (which IS still valid) and I was going to be in Canada a week before I started the hire I did not want the worry of trying to get a DVLA code from abroad. So I got an International Driving Permit from the Post Office for £5.50 before I went. I did not need to show the UK licence, just my IDP and my passport. But we added my partner using his photo licence and they did not ask for a DVLA code!
p.s. I also got online excess cover in advance for £11.0 -
I have an EU (Photocard) drivers licence. (Ireland)
I don't own a car, occasionally use Zipcar, and drive Hire Cars in Ireland when am home, a couple of times a year.
My parents address is on it, and I am in contact with them every couple of days really.
EU rules seem to state that I can drive on it until it expires, but UK rules seem to say I should exchange after being resident 3 yrs. I've never bothered, due to not having a car, and don't need it for id purposes etc. (And have been here well over 3 yrs!)
So, I'm planning on getting a runaround next year, once I have saved a bit of cash.
Will I need to get a UK version?
My googling is not helping!Light Bulb Moment: Feb 2007

There's your answer, whist we remain in the EU, you're ok until you reach 70.0 -
Thanks, was just wondering if I would be obliged to change it because of the address being different to where the car will be registered to.

I am having trouble replacing or renewing my licence, can someone help please.
I have mislaid my Drivers licence which expires December 2016.
I have attempted to replace/renew it on line, But DVLA site,it says does not recognise my details,(name, address, DoB, time lived at present address) licence no., which I know are correct.
I have contact the help line twice who confirmed that the details are correct and to leave the licence details blank, when I tried to do this the box kept flashing red, I could not bypass this step. but I do need to get a replacement card.
I would prefer to use the online service as I thought it would be quicker, and less hassle.

Hello,
My dad has not long retired from lorry driving- his HGV license expired in Feb because he didn't renew it but his car class does not expire until 2019.
On the front of his license the date reflects his HGV expiry date but on the back the 'class' section still says it is valid for driving a normal car. Does he need to renew it?
He is going to Germany on Friday and was going to hire a car- he is now unsure if he will be able to do this. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help!0 -

The front shows the issue date, and the date the photo needs to be renewed.
The back shows the validity for the different categories.
For category 'B', it is normally until the holder is 70.0 -
I just checked mine even though I was confident it was OK. Well, it is but for 3 years less than I thought. Why is it only valid for 7 years?? (I'm not 70, have a clean licence and no medical conditions).

Have you updated or changed your licence and it is just the photo that needs updating in 7 years time?0 -
DVLA sent me a reminder that my licence expires in July 2016, and I should pay to renew it for 10 years. But I will be 70 in September 2016. Will I have to renew again two months later, or will my licence really last 10 years. Any advice appreciated!0
