I've just seen that mine is expired and have to attend a driver behaviour / awareness course on the 25 Oct. :( Your have to produce the full license for the course, but If i send off the application will it be back in time?

If i dont send it until after the course finishes, am i going to get fined??

    Help!
  • I've just had a reminder from DVLA threatening me with £1000 fine if I don't renew photocard. There is no mention of the legislation that gives the power to fine so, I've enquired with the Law Training dept. of local Force and they eventually told me Section 99(2a) Road Traffic 1988 and Schedule 2 Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988. I've looked for both on the net and they aren't recognised so, can anyone say what is the relevant legislation that states that, if you've got a photo card licence you must update the photograph and if you have the old style paper licence with no photograph it really doesn't matter. It's another backdoor Tax for middle England
  • I had my reminder a couple of weeks back. It runs out in a few days.

Today I popped to the bank but on getting there found I'd forgotten my card. My health is quite bad these days so rarely go out so the thought of having to go home and then back out was rather daunting. Luckily I could record my card as lost and still draw money using ID. I don't have a passport so used my driving license. Had it been out of date I wouldn't have been able to use it.

As I said in an earlier post I don't drive any more but it might be worth me paying just so I have a form of ID I can use.

Hey there. I sent my licence into the DVLA for an address change and never got anything back. When asked they replied that all new licences will have to have photo's. I had photo's taken and at the Post Office they said that my ID (US passport) was invalid ID. I'd need a UK passport to use their service, or send my passport in the post for a two week turnaround. I'm flight crew and cannot be without my passport for more than a few days. I'm sure I'm not alone in this dilema and I've got no proof of a UK licence at the moment. Anyone have any ideas of my next move?
    Thanks! Alan

I moved to another EU country 14 years ago. I took my paper licence to the 'Town Hall' for a local one. The man behind the counter told me I would need an up todate photo, I would have to fill a form out and it would cost me money and would take 2 weeks. The legal alternative was to keep my paper one and come back when I'm 70. That's what I intend to do. The fact that it has a UK address on it didn't seem to be an issue. Mind you, I had to get an ID card which I have to carry at all times and in the space of a couple of seconds the cops would know what time I last cleaned my teeth!
Yes, I usually tell it as I see it and respond where I see the need, but never are my comments ment to be taken personally.

Mine expired in March and I've not bothered renewing - why should I pay £20 to the DVLA for it? Just because they threaten to fine me £1000?!

I had my lawyer read through the reminder when I was in his office and he pointed out that at no point in the reminder did it say I had to renew. Indeed he said it said I only 'may' be fined. So I've not bothered and neither have my friends.

I guess if I need to drive abroad I'll probably do it.

It is important to know when your driving licence expiry date is (or was), as it is illegal to drive without a valid licence. Although the DVLA may send renewal reminders prior to the expiry date, it is your responsibility to make sure that your licence is up-to-date, including getting renewal forms if necessary. Driving without a valid driving licence can result in a fine of up to £1,000, and between three and six penalty points on your licence. Your car can also be seized and crushed.
  • It's only the photo that expires every 10 years, the licence is valid until you are 70

An expired photo does not affect the validity of the licence.

Just wanted to state Martins Article is a little misleading on the fact it says you could be fined if you drive without an updated photo.
Actually it can be a fine if you dont update wether you drive or not.
I have a provisional not taking lessons or anything but DVLA informed me i either renew or surrender.

This discussion is not about the licence. It is about the photocard. Two entirely separate things. The penalty for driving without a licence is more serious than a fine of up to £1,000. It is an endorsable offence, for a start.

    From the AA website:

Having a licence which has not been updated will pose problems, particularly if you want to hire a car, or if you have to prove your entitlement to drive to your employer.
It could also lead to a fine of up to £1000 although we have had no reports of this happening for failing to update a photocard.
