I just manhandled a large ham home, which I managed to pick up reduced. It was over 5kg for $30 (about 20 quid). I've bought some split peas too, to make pea and ham soup from the bone. I'd swear the hubby is looking forward to the soup more than the ham itself!
Now I just need to go and spend an hour slicing it to put it in the freezer....
I'm reminded of monty python, and when asked what's for dinner I may offer ham ham ham ham ham ham and beans.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -

The Spam Sketch ================
(Spam = Spiced Pork And Ham, a sort of cheap luncheon meat)
Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings with horned helmets on. A man and his wife enter.
Man (Eric Idle): You sit here, dear.
Wife (Graham Chapman in drag): All right.
Man (to Waitress): Morning!
Waitress (Terry Jones, in drag as a bit of a rat-bag): Morning!
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;
Vikings (starting to chant): Spam spam spam spam...
Waitress: ...spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam...
Vikings (singing): Spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam!
Waitress: ...or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
Wife: Have you got anything without spam?
Waitress: Well, there's spam egg sausage and spam, that's not got much spam in it.
Wife: I don't want ANY spam!
Man: Why can't she have egg bacon spam and sausage?
Wife: THAT'S got spam in it!
Man: Hasn't got as much spam in it as spam egg sausage and spam, has it?
Vikings: Spam spam spam spam (crescendo through next few lines)
Wife: Could you do the egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam then?
Waitress: Urgghh!
Wife: What do you mean 'Urgghh'? I don't like spam!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!)
Waitress: Shut up!
Vikings: Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up! (Vikings stop) Bloody Vikings! You can't have egg bacon spam and sausage without the spam.
Wife (shrieks): I don't like spam!
Man: Sshh, dear, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your spam. I love it. I'm having spam spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam and spam!
Vikings (singing): Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam!
Waitress: Shut up!! Baked beans are off.
Man: Well could I have her spam instead of the baked beans then? Waitress: You mean spam spam spam spam spam spam... (but it is too late and the Vikings drown her words)
Vikings (singing elaborately): Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam! Wonderful spam! Spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam spa-a-a-a-a-am spam. Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Lovely spam! Collected about 10 lbs of plums and a huge container of blackberries from a walk over the Downs at the weekend. Now have 7 pots of plum jam. The rest of the fruit is in the freezer for more jam making and fruit crumbles...I love foraging and it's free!!!
The price of fruit, particularly berries, in the supermarkets is ridiculous. Looking forward to our Autumn raspberries from the garden. Not much of a harvest to boast about is it really
Mind you, on the plus side, my apple tree is absolutely groaning under its own weight with fruit ... can't wait until those can be harvested

Wow! Found you by accident.
Couldn't keep up with the old thread.
Thanks JG and NS for the info about links - I have often wondered how people do that. I shall go and have a practice.
We are having hg potatoes all the time now and they are delicious. All the salad stuff is doing great and the runner beans have taken off:) Love it when they are producing enough for two or three meals a week. We are having them for dinner today. Will be feeding 10 - OH and me plus DD1, DD2, DSIL, 3DGSs and 2DGDsThe cooking for a houseful is fine but keeping up with the washing up is a bit of a challenge.

I think it's the fact that granny used the sewing machine on an almost daily basis and was so specific about giving it to me that makes me feel so bad. I may see if I can find any sort of museums or historic type places which would be interested in it. I'd rather give it away than sell it if I could find someone that wanted it for it's historic value rather than £ value if that makes sense.
Goodness knows what's wrong with me - I'm usually practical to the point of being hard hearted about things. I used to be called The Ice Queen by my friends - old age has me slipping:)
It sounds to me like the best way to deal with this too is to do something like ask a museum if they want it. As various museums even have displays from the 1950s (ie rather more recent) then some museum may well want it.
Re "old age" having you "slipping" - that makes perfect sense to me....as the older one gets then the less the need for material possessions and the more "other values" can take precedence.
SMILEYT - good luck indeed with your allotment campaign. At the least - it will help show the Council that they have to take account of ALL the residents' needs. Keep us posted as to how its going.
SQUEAKY - That spam sketch is on YouTube - and I confess to having watched it several times - as it made me grin.
Re fruit on trees - its my pear tree that is being dicey - precisely 3 pears! I shall have to "have words" with that tree about "must do better in future years or.....". Got some plums and apples this year though. Strawberries - dont think I'll bother again - not enough food produced for space taken. Tomatoes - shouldnt have put my first few plants out rather early - think a bit of frost may have caught their leaves (as they look a bit blackened and sorry for themselves). The more recent tomato plants look good thankfully. Must have nasturtiums again next year - it just didnt happen this year and I've not only not had any nasturtiums to add to salads - but have been positively plagued by whitefly (ie maybe my other plants really need nasturtiums as companion plants??).
Actually bought a ready meal - luxury one as treat - and have a HUGE round "dish" it came in. I think I shall repurpose that by chucking a bit of soil in it and it will sit in my kitchen growing peashoots for my salads (as well as having ones put in anywhere I see a tiny space outside).
Think I've now worked out the perfect plan (much chopping and changing round later) as to what to have for maximum use of my matchbox garden:
- those fruit trees
- as many tomatoes as I can cram in
- the herbs I like (2 types of mint, lemon thyme, lemon balm, chives, rosemary)
- 2 types of lettuce
- peashoots
- nasturtiums
- calendula
- rocket
- 2-4 other types of green quickgrowing veg (eg pak choi, lambs lettuce, sorrel)
and I think I will have crammed in as much food as I can. Note to self - must try a tomato/potato plant next year to see what that comes out like (ie grafting a potato onto the roots of a tomato plant and seeing if I can get double value from the space with a crop of potatoes as well).0
