It was getting tough in 2006 and the workhouse still threatens us in 2011

Fab, shiney new thread. Thanks Kittie.
Been out today on OH's day off to Harewood House with the 2 for 1 card from gardeners world mag so only had to pay for 1 adult, both kids still too young to pay for. Jiggered now though really need to get fit again, don't think I ever really regained my fitness after DD was born. DS is only 10 weeks now so not going to be too hard on myself.
Looks like we shall be eating our first homegrown courgettes of the year tomorrow - they've been so slow to get going this year, must be the funny weather, but at least they're here now and plenty of small ones coming on each plant so we'll probably be sick of them in a fortnight!0 -
Thank you NS, now you are the one to tell me how to hide the url under your own words ie `Here`. Please
I have spent ages trying to work it out
Thanks for putting the link in kittie. I do it just like jackieg but when I've typed the word I want to use I always bold it first before highlighting and then clicking the world symbol. As jackie says make sure you delete the http that's already in the box before pasting your link.0 -

Well done on the links Kittie
Thanks for the suggestion about BOLD NS, that's a great tip too.
Kittie I have that book, it is great (although I have only opened it twice, it looks nice on the shelf)
I seem to have oregano sprung up out of nowhere in my compost heap, I did throw a dead (or so I thought) plant in it at the end of last summer, and it is running away with my compost now, has anyone tried drying oregano themselves at home? It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
Thanks for a lovely new thread to lurk on.
Some time on the DFW board (debts of £21k ) and some on here. Never did catch up with the last thread, it was so longso really pleased there's a new one

Nice new thread - thank you. It will be much quicker to catch up with (for a while anyway!)
I had an unexpected find tonight at the back of the freezer - some home made lemon ice cream. I have some lemon and poppy seed Costco muffins in the freezer so I think tomorrow night I'll be heating one of them and serving up with the ice cream. I'm starting to work my way through the freezer contents as I want to defrost them both soon. Hubby always says it makes for very interesting meals when I'm using things up:D
I've also taken a notion to make gingerbread. I haven't had any for ages so I'll make some later in the week. I might ice it for a change too.
I now have a total of 10 tomatoes on my 3 plants - hardly enough to start a greengrocers but it's progress and not bad considering they are outside.
I'm thinking of planting a plum tree for next year as one of my friends said they produce lots of fruit. I'm not sure if they tend to produce in their first full year though - will have to do some research.
I'm also planning to venture into my loft later in the week. I've been merrily putting things up there for the last 14 years or so and I feel I really should go and see what's up there. I figure if I rotated some vases, paintings etc I could give a few rooms a new look without it costing a penny. I also need to check if the ceiling is going to come down anytime soon due to my "collection" up there!
I have a bit of a dilemma - my late grandmother gave me her Singer treadle sewing machine about 12 years ago. She gave it to me rather than anyone else as I used to sew a lot and she considered that I took good care of things. It's in full working order, the wood could do with a bit of restoration but it still looks great. It's been on display since the day I got it however it doesn't really fit in with the style of my house. I can't bring myself to get rid of it though. I checked the serial number and found it is listed as 1891:eek: which would be about right. Granny got it as a wedding present in 1939 and said it had been a wedding gift to her mother in law in 1914 and wasn't new then. My mum (her daughter) thinks I should advertise it for sale but I feel so disloyal so at the moment it's heading for the garage with a cover to protect it. I'm not overly sentimental normally but I can't bring myself to let this go for some reason. Silly, I know:o
Off to catch up on the rest of the thread now:)0 -
Oh, I love treadle machines! They come up occasionally on freecycle, but I just don't have the room for one.
I learnt to sew on one and loved the rythmn.

Oregano dries really easily Jac. I hang it upside down on the kitchen pulley but it would work in a very low oven too.
Very nice couple of days here so nothing tough to report and nothing OS either other than eating lots of leftovers from a big barbeque yesterday. The weather is fabulous so we are spending as much time at the beach as possible.
Good Food magazine subscription arrived this morning so I have loosely based my meal plans on some of the lovely recipes in there.0 -

Could you do what my half-sister did? She was left a china doll that was her mum's. It was quite valuable, but it didn't fit in with my sister's stuff and ended up tucked way in the loft. So finally she sold it to a doll's museum and used the money to buy a welsh dresser which is much more to her taste, looks great and has (almost) the same sentimental value.
Kittie, the garden to kitchen book looks great: it's going straight on my Christmas list.
I'm feeling guilty: when OH was cutting the hedge he disturbed a bird's nest which he assumed was empty, but when he nudged it apparently a couple of little beaks appeared. I hope we haven't disturbed it so badly that the mother doesn't come back. We deliberately wait until this time of year to make sure there aren't any fledglings about, but this nest seems quite late.0 -
A lurker too, good to see a new thread.
Just as a mention I got red lentils today that were £1.99 for 2kg from Tesco, they were in the world food aisle half price - I know many of you use them for bulking out meats, soups etc and thought I would mention as the cheapest of the others were 17p per 100g instead of the 10p these worked out at. Bought two bags one for now and the other for sometime before their expiry in July 2013!Every days a School day!0
