  • weeze congrats on the move. I know people who still have unpacked boxes after 10 years so I would not worry about three weeks. Glad you are settling in.

charlies aunt I am so sorry to hear about your cat. It is heartbreaking to loose a member of the family

softstuff I too know the pain of a migraine, Get yourself to bed and say there until it has gone.

I am having another weekend off due to the worrying health problems I have been having so hoping to catch up with housework etc. Have done all of the ironing.

Will start meal planning again this week as I have not done it for the last few weeks and need to get back on track with it. I’m off to check out the contents of my cupboards.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

Well we have had the first cold of the season in the house..poor iris..all snotty and miserable..good job i stocked up my little medicine box...

Hubby and son harvested 29 butternut-squashes..yikes..i have been making soup with a few of them and roasted quite a few..the others are stored on top of the wardrobe in the toy room/store room...also he brought home 2 kg of carrots so soup again was made.

We have private medical cover at present because it comes with my husband's job but that will end when he retires. I think for anything catastrophic you have to fall back on the NHS and there is no doubt they are fantastic for really serious conditions. I think what most of us worry about is needing regular care and being left to fester in our own wee all day or needing a relatively small procedure which is rationed.

Trying to stay healthy is fine but not always in our own control. I think we will downsize from this house at some stage and I will certainly try and persuade DH to go for something that should help us to maintain our independence for as long as possible.

I have been thinking along the same lines as you Kittie, that one should effectively self insure for relatively common but hard-to-get on the NHS procedures. I had in mind that one should budget for needing cataract operations (both eyes), hip replacements and a decent hearing aid. But I don't really know how much that would cost. I do know that they pad the charges when BUPA or PPP are paying (that's the problem they have in the US) and if you are paying from your own resources it is often less.

When our private cover ends, I am inclined to carry on paying to see my opthalmologist once a year. I would have to request a referral in December to see her for my annual review in May under the NHS. That's not a problem in itself because it doesn't cause me any problems on an ongoing basis, but she told me that if I had been referred under the NHS she would have been limited to prescribing Lumigan instead of Xalatan for my glaucoma. Xalatan is much better tolerated by most people and has fewer side effects than Lumigan - but it is more expensive and it would come out of the hospital's budget. Because I saw her privately, she was able to recommend to my GP that he should prescribe Xalatan, which I get under the NHS.

...Agreed - ie to bear in mind how much things cost if even private medical insurance is a "let down". Got that pretty worked out - cataract operation is about £1,000 per eye (and fingers crossed it will never be necessary).

My "back up insurance plan" is steadily getting myself more and more informed about how to deal with "minor ailments". Sat there this week thinking "Agh! I've just read what looks like a failsafe/readily available/totally free way to deal with such-and-such a minor ailment thats been going on for months - and I could have saved that months of treating it and the £60 odd its cost to date. Change of plans - I'll do that instead and it takes about a fortnight and guaranteed to work". Duh - <slap head smilie>. A lotta those "old wives tales" have some basis in fact it would appear....

Oh well - feeling "positive" right now - as I had spent some weeks wondering whether to tell/how to tell the relevant person that I was picking up "thief vibes" about someone. But - I summonsed up my nerve/found a tactful way to do so (ahem...tact not being a strong point of mine:o:rotfl:) - and it turned out that they had been wondering who was doing some thieving and, on occasion, guess who it was...:D. B*gger tried to land an innocent person in it and say it was them instead:mad:. Said "innocent person" is one of those I would instantly employ for any job they were capable of and trust them to do the job perfectly:mad:. But - feeling good I spotted the "bad apple" accurately:D and mighta saved an innocent person from suffering because of them.

I very very rarely "nip in" and say "Agh! Watch out for that person" - but, when I do I'm sure of it and its good to know my judgement cant be that amiss..<whew smilie>
