Kittie, I think I remember you having a vacuum packer? In which case boiloed beetroot keeps well done that way for a couple of weeks I have found, to give you more time to preserve it. I've got a lovely beetroot chutney recipe if you'd like it.
And I couldn't agree with you more about private health care.:T0 -
Good morning everyone - prodigal daughter returning. How absolutely wonderful to find you all again and as I was reading the posts all those familiar names were so reassuring. something very comforting about familiarity. Must be 4 or 5 months since i've been on here - things happening which didn't leave a lot of time for indulging myself on here. Anyway i'm glad i found this thread again - don't know how I'll ever catch up again - but like all of you i am thinking about winter and the tough times ahead.Treat the Earth well,It was not given to you by your parents,It was loaned to you by your children.Masai proverb0

kittie - I totally agree about being pessimism/ negative thinking. I bumble through life assuming the best of people, that it'll all work out, that decisions I have to make will be the right ones. As 'luck' would have it things generally have worked out, people demonstrate their best nature and in the round decision have been good ones - but when they don't at least I only get to feel rubbish after the event not for months/years leading up to it.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

We have private medical cover at present because it comes with my husband's job but that will end when he retires. I think for anything catastrophic you have to fall back on the NHS and there is no doubt they are fantastic for really serious conditions. I think what most of us worry about is needing regular care and being left to fester in our own wee all day or needing a relatively small procedure which is rationed.
Trying to stay healthy is fine but not always in our own control. I think we will downsize from this house at some stage and I will certainly try and persuade DH to go for something that should help us to maintain our independence for as long as possible.
I have been thinking along the same lines as you Kittie, that one should effectively self insure for relatively common but hard-to-get on the NHS procedures. I had in mind that one should budget for needing cataract operations (both eyes), hip replacements and a decent hearing aid. But I don't really know how much that would cost. I do know that they pad the charges when BUPA or PPP are paying (that's the problem they have in the US) and if you are paying from your own resources it is often less.
When our private cover ends, I am inclined to carry on paying to see my opthalmologist once a year. I would have to request a referral in December to see her for my annual review in May under the NHS. That's not a problem in itself because it doesn't cause me any problems on an ongoing basis, but she told me that if I had been referred under the NHS she would have been limited to prescribing Lumigan instead of Xalatan for my glaucoma. Xalatan is much better tolerated by most people and has fewer side effects than Lumigan - but it is more expensive and it would come out of the hospital's budget. Because I saw her privately, she was able to recommend to my GP that he should prescribe Xalatan, which I get under the NHS.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

I know it needs work, but structurally, being a terrace, there's a house each side holding it up? How bad can it be?
But if you don't want to have to do much work and have another £65K in your budget.

This is just across the estuary from us in the village of St. Dogmaels. Most of the houses here have stunning views, being stacked up the sides of the valley. Not lots of work about, bur perfect if you are retired, or self employed with a skill that would 'move'.
Promise I don't work for the estate agents! LOL!
