Well, thank you all for your views on this matter.
Whitelabel said that she agreed with the policy, so did many others.
But my point was, the style of the sock was not visable in the packaging, it wasn't untill the sock was taken out that you could see the design, which was plain on the underside of the sock, but on the top part of the sock it was mesh effect, that my hubby did not like, he said they looked too much like Fish Net Stockings! This was not visable on the packaging as they were tightly packed in a band of 7pairs!!
Also their underwear do not have the sticky label in the gusset of the pants, so where's the hygeine in that?????
Plus as someone else pointed out.... Didn't he know what size sock he needed before I BOUGHT THEM FOR HIM!!!
Yes of course i know what size sock he takes normally. But as he is a size 14 he has a very high instep, and sometimes the sock is cut on the narrow size, so i wanted to make sure they would be wide enough for him.
And these people that have posted (yuk) they wouldn't want to have someone's pre-tried on socks. But your quite happy to buy shoes, or underwear that have been on some scanky body???
I think that most of you must be employed by Marks and Spencer's to post such biast replies.
But,,, your all entitled to your views i guess?
Marks and Spencer is not the store that it once was, and the customer service has gone down the pan too.
And that is not a comment because of the sock issue. It's a fact!

Well, thanks for the warning OP - I now know that it's safe to buy socks from M&S.

. I did get him to try on one sock to be sure they fitted him. (As he is a size 13) they fitted fine. So i decided to take them back to exchange them for another set that were just plain.

Personally, I'm not surprised you needed to try them on him if his feet grow a size every few days
Saving as much as possible to replace all the things I've had years and are on their way to the knackers yard

I'd be more worried about your other half Tralu. Between your first and second post he has gone up a size and developed a high arch. At this rate of growth, clown shops may be your only option for socks and shoes.
