Well, thank you all for your views on this matter.
Whitelabel said that she agreed with the policy, so did [STRIKE]many[/STRIKE] all the others.

    Corrected for you.

And I've never worked in retail. And I also agree - I'd not want to buy previously worn socks. *buerk.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

you should have made some sock puppets then you would have had lots of friends who might agree with your view on this sensible policy from m and s but i get the feeling even the sock puppets would disagree

    I can't complain about them.

I bought some stuff and when I got home one of the items was missing.

I rang them up and they could not find anything left at the till but they told me they would put another one aside for me to pick up next time I was in.

Not sure other shops would have done this.I know Tesco would not have done.
  • If the design was not visible until you opened the packet then I would say you have every right to return them on those grounds. I can also understand the need to try them on as my partner also has size 14 feet and yet few shops sell socks in that size, or ever have them in stock so he usually gets 6-12 size as most stretch enough. I would say though, the second the sock was tried on, it breaches their policy and therefore could not be returned as they would not be able to sell the pack again.

A policy is a policy, whether it's agreed with or not, the moment you pay, you agree to be bound by that policy. You're lucky that they exchanged for you, they should have done as the design was hidden from view, not because of the worn issue. I don't work for m&s and I am not biased against anything second hand, just stating a view. :)

I've returned bras that didn't fit in M&S before, I didn't think you could return knickers (and socks) though. I was told to keep my daughter's multipack of Angel bras on the hanger if I wanted to return them once though!

M&S lets you try on bras and swimwear, with the swimwear having these little plastic strips. They also let you return these items as long as they are clearly unworn. I buy bras via mail order from them as my local store doesn't carry the full range of sizes and I've never had any problem returning bras that don't fit.

I would have thought that socks with unusual features like mesh or breathable panels would either have a picture on the front of the ticket or be described as such?

  • I used to work at M&S. Yeah, they never accept returned worn socks or undies, and quite right too. It is easy to pick up all sorts of bugs / fungus etc. and you would be amazed at the number of people (usually women) who will buy expensive undies (e.g. matching bra, knickers, stockings, suspenders for a wedding, party, holiday etc.), wear them once (leaving marks and / or odour in the gusset - nice!! When working on the customer service desk I was often quite appalled) and then attempt to return them.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to buy anything at M&S. Their goods are overpriced and, unlike many years ago, most of their clothing is made overseas (labour cheap - not reflected in cost of item).

Must be a pain buying dress items for someone who falls outside of "normal" size range. Are there no internet sites that cater especially? Failing that, why not save up for a USA holiday, take empty suitcases and stock up? You'll find extensive ranges for large/tall/extra small people. Good quality, low prices and in some states, there is even no sales tax.

Getting back to M&S, haven't been in there for years and I don't miss it. (was an avid fan for decades)

don't know why this is deemed a ridiculous policy, seems a perfectly correct one to me not to exchange socks that they would not be able to sell again, but i agree that from a hygiene aspect, its no worse than trying on shoes when barefooted, but then again i don't think thats right either !

Ive bought socks from M&S before and i was able to see the design of the socks without trying them on or by removing the packaging.
