Marks & Spencer's Ridiculous Policy

I just want to warn people of the experience i recently had with the customer service department at Marks & Spencer.
I purchased a pack of 7 socks for my partner, and when i got them home i showed them to him, he didn't like them because they had a mesh effect on the top part of the sock. I did get him to try on one sock to be sure they fitted him. (As he is a size 13) they fitted fine. So i decided to take them back to exchange them for another set that were just plain.
When the assistant asked me if they had been tried on, and i said in all innocence and honesty yes just one to see if it fitted, she then replied to me that company policy is.... that they do not exchange or refund on socks!!
I had never heard of anything so ridiculous in all my days of shopping at marks. She was quite adament, so i asked to see a manager, the answer was the same from her. I saw red  and asked why there were no signs up stating this! Anyway after a lot of heated discussion she as a good will gesture allowed me to exchange the socks, but made it clear that the sock would have to be destroyed as they could not re sell to anyone else!!
I asked her about knickers and bra's that are allowed to be brought back, and that is more un hygenic than trying 1 sock on! But that is ok! And shoes that are tried on regularly by people bare-footed with corns, callouses, verruccas and fungal infections. But that is fine too. Absolute madness!
So please be aware that if you do buy socks from there and they are not suitable, don't expect an exchange or refund! You will be lumbered with them.

Id hate to buy socks that had been worn by some one else, so i think the policy is right.
Underwear policy applies the same, except where they have those plastic protectors in place, and even then they can be refused at discretion of the store.
unless it is faulty they, and every other store in the uk have no obligation at all to refund or replace, it is their good will.
Statutory rights work both ways. unless there is a policy clearly stating no questions asked exchange or return, you havent a leg to stand on.
Surely you knew what size socks he wears so why try them on, especially as he already didnt like them ?0 -
Sorry but I think they are right.
I personally would not want to buy socks that someone had tried on previously.0 -
M&S are not the only company where you can't exchange socks/underwear.
Surely you can see why?Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
I'd agree with M and S, sorry. But I wouldnt want someone trying them on. Didnt he say he didnt like them before he tried them on? They're only socks after all, cant he grow to love them?Married the lovely Mr P 28th April 2012. Little P born 29th Jan 20140

Yuk I hate the thought of buying socks that someone else had tried on.
I hope they keep this policy.0 -
I also agree that it would horrify me to think that they sold socks which were preworn.:eek:Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
