The last decent automatic was the borg warner 35.

I have a new Audi A1 with an auto box, don't know what type of box it is but it's nice to drive. I had a test drive in a Toyota with a MMT box and I found it horrible to drive.
I don't like the Audi as much if I have the stop start switched on, maybe if I persisted I'd get used to it but I just automatically switch it off now.

My last car was an Audi A4 with a multitronic. Never had any problem with and we had the car for 5 years until it had 110k on the clock, although a gearbox oil change was expensive at £160. I just used to use it as a normal automatic. Husband used to use the multitronic for overtaking. It was just a normal automatic really.

I now have a Mercedes c200k and that's a proper automatic. It has a comfort and a sport setting. I never take it out of comfort. It has a very good pick up for an automatic. I don't really like that the handbrake is a foot pedal though. This car is due a gearbox oil change in just over 4000 miles time. We've been told that's over £200. I'm sure a lot of people just don't bother with changing the oil and maybe that's why they have problems?

Many thanks, so are we thinking that Mercedes and BMW have the traditional (non mmt etc) gearbox fitted? As a single woman, the car salesmen will say anything to get a sale, so I'd rather go armed with the correct information.

The new DS4 is a !!!!!! semi auto heap of crap. I've just spent the last 24 hours with one- shame really as it's a fantastic car!

That's because you were attempting to drive it as an automatic. It is not an automatic, it is a manual transmission with an automatic clutch (for the want of a better explanation).

Anything that is sold in America with a full auto, such as the BMW 1
Funny enough it is a bit of a Europe thing this "stick shift" the Yanks prefer comfort to screeching from 1 set of lights to the next and slamming the brakes on.

    CVT's are unreliable though.

I had a DAF CVT many years ago. The belts kept stretching and needed replacing every ten thousand miles. :D

I have been thinking about a one year old BMW 1 series. Hopefully that'll give me a couple of years trouble free motoring :-)

Why haven't you looked at the BMW website?

BMW is semi automatic as you can stick it in D or use the shifts on the steering, although there is an option to just stick to standard automatic same with the DSG gearboxes from VAG Group.
