The new DS4 is a !!!!!! semi auto heap of crap. I've just spent the last 24 hours with one- shame really as it's a fantastic car!

Is that the same with all Citroen or just the new DS3 & DS4?

    CVT's are unreliable though.

The Hyundai i10 and i20 are proper torque converter automatics, so is the Kia Rio. I agree that MMT automatics are crap, but most CVT ones are OK, though the new Micra CVT is said to be noisy. The previous Micra had a torque converter, the one before that had a CVT.

Three Yaris gearboxes in three years, needless to say I got rid of it as soon as the warranty was up. The gearbox in my Jazz has now begun to slip gears, which is driving me crazy. I was going to change my car within six months anyway, so I'll just have to do it a bit sooner. The reversing sensors also bleep whenever they feel like it and as I cannot twist, they are needed.

So you've gone through 4 gearboxes on two different manufacturers?

The problem with the Yaris is apparently almost always electrical btw, needing the replacement of a few 50pence Automotive grade relays.
The Honda seems to dislike not having it's oil changed at the correct intervals, which if it's serviced by the lazy 17year trainee dealership mechanic is likely to fail well before it's time.

I think certain factors need to be looked at here, else your gonna keep mincing up gearboxes on whatever car you own.

  • If you're staying in the same class as Yaris/Jazz you'd do well to look at equivalent Korean cars which do come with proper torque converter automatics...bit old fashioned the Koreans and no bad thing, if it ain't broke etc.

BMW's use proper auto boxes too, if you were thinking of going slightly larger the auto's are lovely to drive, petrol or BMW's very fine Diesel, the auto box used putting the icing on a particularly classy cake.

Given that there isn't widely reported problems with the Yaris or Jazz it must be another factor that is causing your problems - or you are extremely unlucky.

I have been thinking about a one year old BMW 1 series. Hopefully that'll give me a couple of years trouble free motoring :-)

Maybe they were back in the '80's when they were fitted to the Fiesta and Micra.

The only CVT box to avoid would be the Audi CVT or multitronic. The quattros have a normal autobox rather than a cvt apparwntly.

BMWs are fitted with a traditional automatic box as are most Mercedes. Not sure if they still make the nightmarw A Class with the clutchless manual though.

I reckon you should wait till the new hybrid Yaris comes oyt or go for the Auris Hybrid. I have deiven a fair few miles in a Prius a couple of years ago and they were a very smooth drive.

VAG group cars seem to be mostly the DSG type box that you dislike for some reason.

However your big issue seems to be with the jerky semi autos, though I have no real interest in knowing which are actually automatics with a manual mode or a manual with an automatic mode.

The DSG box is a nice box to use, but some report a little jerkiness.

One thing to consider you have three autoboxes fail in a Toyota and now you have an autobox on the way out in a Honda?

What are you doing to these cars? Or do you do a very high annual mileage?
