Cat Deterrent?

My neighbours cat seems to have taken a fancy to using the gravel outside my house as a litter tray.
Does anybody know what I can use to try and stop it going there?

Thanks

  • start putting the presents on your neigbours doorstep with a 'thanks but no thanks note' on it. Seriously why do people get 'pets' that crap on everyone elses property, sit on and scratch everyone elses cars and manage to open wheelie bins to get at the nappies (gross). If they were three inches shorter you could phone the council to get rid of the vermin.

I've found the only way is to watch out for them and 'shoo' them with some foot stamping. They seem to stay away after a while.

my friend used to keep a loaded water gun on her window sill and when ever she spotted the cat crappign on her garden she'd shoot it with the water pistol out of the window - the cat soon got the hint but i heard orange peel is good for detering them too - or why not buy pepper dust form wilkinsons - if you havent got other pets and little kiddies likely to roll in it - also black pepper seems to work wiht my next door neighbours cats

I'm fairly sure that you might get away with returning unwanted presents from dogs since these are meant to be under the owner's control - all the pooper scooper type things and not fouling pavements.

But as far as I know (and I might well be wrong) cats are not classed as domestic animals but are still considered to be wild. So the only way to deal with this would indeed be to discourage them from visiting. Not easy since gravel drives are seen as ideal potty places by cats!

  • unfortunatetly gravel is like cat litter, so you will probably have a battle on your hands in stopping the cat, you can get sonic cat scarers which may be your best bet.
  • I used to have the same problem with a neighbours cat and found that pepper or similar strong scent really works - they just don't like it. In high winds, might be best to mix pepper with water and throw it all over the area concerned. You can also get a good product called "cat off" or something similar but pepper might be cheaper to try.

    Good luck.

Water gun works, as does pepper and orange peel. I find that now I have 2 dogs they don't tend to bother. Used to be a nightmare as they were always pooping in my sons sand pit!!

  • I had the same problem, and over a few years had tried various home made and shop bought remedies, they worked for short periods of time, but needed regular replacing.

A friend recommended Claytek Cat Repellent, I've still got half of the tub left - completely solved the problem. Its fired clay pellets that smell strongly of lemon. The smell lasts for weeks, and the pellets just look like gravel.

I just scattered a handful amongst the gravel, once a month for several months over one summer, and the cats have never returned.

Kept the tub, just in case, but never needed it now for a couple of years.

Orange peel works for me. Rip it into tiny pieces and scatter.
