But seriously folks - rats, snakes and frogs. Are you insane?

    Ever so slightly :D

Seriously though, snakes aren't as bad as some folk believe them to be and they do make interesting pets, certain species are easy to keep, easy to handle and all are extremely cheap to feed and keep.
It's the intial cost of the set ups for them that cost a whole lot of money.

Where it all come from for me was, as a youngster I were never allowed to keep anything at all like this, but, I have always been extremely fond of reptiles, snakes especially. Why, I have no idea, I've always felt drawn to them. Hubby hates them, well, hate is a strong word, he's scared of them. But he knows as of yet I am yet to be bitten and see's me handling mine everyday. Even my children handle them (under strict supervision of course) and the youngest one is just a toddler :)

I've never really understood why hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, chinchillas, degus, ferrets and even mice are considered normal loveable pets but rats are so unthinkable. What's that about?

Rats are far far more interactive than hamsters and gerbils, they enjoy human company, they learn tricks, they have unique personalities. Rats are more like miniature dogs than anything else really.

To be honest the setup isn't that expensive unless you're buying at pet shop prices.
Dunelm sort out your fake plants cheaper than Exo Terra
You can build your own vivs to save a bit, or get a viv builder to sort you out.. usually £100 cheaper than a shop unless you're ordering Vivexotics online.
if you keep royals then you can knock up a RUB rack and run it on a heat cable powered by a pulse stat.

with a bit of effort you can do it pretty cheap. I've got 5 glass vivs
    80cm x 80cm x 40cm - £10.50 off eBay with an 11x11 heat mat
    24x18x18 exo terra - £35 off eBay
24x18x18 exo terra - £35 off eBay with a light canopy and 'bits'
36x18x18 exo terra - £56 off eBay with a 24inch light canopy, 'bits' and a 17x11 heat mat
31x15x20 which looks like an ENT - £26.99 off eBay with a heat mat, mat stat, bowls, light fittings, fake plants, bag of wood chips, timers and a plug extension

Tinks is in a ZooZone II which i paid a tenner for.

i also build an awesome beardie viv out of scrap that cost me £200 but that included stats, lighting and about £40's worth of feet for it and £30 on faux leather.

I know it can be done cheaply, some folks won't though, one thing I won't buy is second hand heat mats/bulbs (bulbs don't cost that much anyway) and thermostats, that's pretty much where I do draw the line:)

we used to have 20+ snakes, bearded dragons, leopard geckos.

we now have the usual furry pets, dogs, cats, birds, but also one royal python called Fluffy

would have more reps if we could afford to keep them

i don't mind second hand thermostats as Habistat will repair theirs for a fiver if there are any issues, and that fiver is pretty much to cover postage. Definitely no point buying second hand bulbs, £1 for three at Asda.. lol
