Went to see the quit nurse today & she has given me step 2 patches plus i must keep going with the plastic ciggy thingy!
If i end up having an allergic reaction to it, then she said that she will get some advice from my GP
Apparently there is a product on the market simular to Zyban but doesnt affect those people who are hypertensive (like myself) So ive got a week to see if the patches help. Failing that im gonna try the nasal spray & if that fails then im stuffed as ive tried everything else!!!
    Oh well must keep trying
Keep you all posted as usual

Your GP and my GP (- sounds like the opening of a song?) don't seem to be reading the same books!
I have high blood pressure - this was the decider for me to give up NOW!
I was told that Zyban was contra-indicated for diabetics and epileptics not hypertensives and I've not had any difficulties other than gaining 10kg. I'm sleeping better too - I no longer wake at 02.30 for a fag and a coffee before returning to doze fitfully until 06.00. It's all coming out now!

Good luck with the patches - hope you are saving a good few quid - have your worked out how much? TTFN

I'm on day, well in fact night 8 of not smoking and I feel absolutely great. I dont smell, my hair and clothes dont stink of smoke, my fingers dont smell, I can breathe. However I have bad breathe, apparantely this is normal for the first week or so. Its not too bad! I just hope I can keep at it. My big test comes this weekend when it will be the first time I go out for a drink arggh!!!!
    Good luck to all.
The best thing is, I've been saving the money I'd have spent on cigarettes and so far have over £25!!!

    Hi,

I know its been mentioned before but please try the allen carr way . I didnt attend a clinic but simply bought the book from tesco, think it was about a fiver . I Stopped smoking over a year ago after 20 years.

Looks of usefull info on the web site, and please believe me all the claims are true. The best bit of all is after a while you actually `forget` to smoke.

Hi needtobe, How are you getting on?
I'm not a medico but that was the first question I asked and I was told Zyban was perfectly fine. But your health authority may not allow it to be dispensed on NHS prescription - they won't pay for it in the next county to us for example. I found NRT worse than useless and said so. With Zyban it's been umteenth time lucky and my OH has given up too. So my Doc is delighted and my 16 year old son likewise:T :j :rotfl:

I'm trying to calculate how much we've saved taking into account the price increase since the Budget. I'll let you know.

    Hope you're staying solid!
  • I know loads of people have said this but Allen Carr's book worked for me too. I'd tried NRT, Zyban, cold turkey etc. I read this book in a night and have not smoked since. I bought it from amazon and it cost less than a packet of fags.

Well done everyone who has stopped. Keep it up, you won't regret it!

I am trying to calculate how much i have spent over the past 20 years of smoking.
Do i base the caluclations on todays prices - or do i estimate the cost?

Any advice is always gratfully received.

I am on week 2 of not smoking - well sort of, im on step 2 patch & the inhalator but there are 4 cigs that i am finding  really hard to break,
the one first thing in the morning
the one after lunch (at work)
the one after my evening meal & finally the one last thing at night.

I have spoken to my quit nurse at the doctors & she has told me not to beat myself up over them, & that 4 is better than 20-25 per day i was smoking, but after i have smoked it i feel really deflated.
Advise on how to conquer these 4 would also be helpful.

Good luck to those who are smoke free & doing well

    cheers all

Hi needtobe, your nurse is right you are making real progress and saving £30-£35 a week.:A

If you don't want to try the books - I didn't find them helpful but I know folks who have then I'd try picking off the last 4 one at a time.
Work out a ritual to follow before you can have the first one. Something like: put your fags in an awkward place when you go to bed. Then when you get up - Drink a glass of water -then go to the back door/window take a deep breath or four. Then go and put the kettle on (fags nowhere near?) and do a couple of jobs eg find your keys (anything you can do every day) and tell yourself when you're ready to go out (10 mins earlier than usual as you haven't stopped for one yet) then you can have the first one. With any luck there wont be time but whatever - you will have broken the habit of a cig first thing.

Give yourself a treat instead of the one at work - Drink a glass of water then - Chocolate?
If you can cut out 1 and 2 it's a pity not to try for a whole 24 hours but not the end of the world.

    Good Luck - Kate
