  • Susan Hepburn's book and cd "Stop smoking in 1 hour"...about £8.
I gave up smoking (after 52yrs!) with minimal problems 4 months ago, using this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!

  • dear Rachel.
the help you need depends much on the reasons why you gave up.

i gave up smoking recently for vanity reasons, and i put up cuttings of a certain female celebrity who is the same age as me and horribly wrinkled . most pictures of of her are airbrused but not all. i keep them as reminders (around the home at my desk etc) of why i gave up as i was approaching 40 and needed to take better care of myself instead of willfully damage myself.

i still crave about once a day but that's OK; a supportive network of friends who won't let you nab one of their cigs is helpful.

    good luck to you

I stopped 2 weeks ago today. Was on 30 a day. A using NRT patches prescribed by the GP. As a replacement I have found using frozen fruit a good distraction. A peeled sectioned orange, grapes, sliced banana etc frozen seem to be working for me!

I gave up last night at 10.30. I tried to give up the night before, but brought a pack of cigs after work and smoked them all before I quit again. Not smoked at all today, so holding out much hope. I'm really fed up with smoking, smelling awful, stained teeth, eugh just grossness. Most importantly I'm fed up with the strain on my body.
Good luck to everyone who is in the process of/thinking about quitting

This book is great. Ive stopped smoking in 1 hour 16 times since I read it. ;-)
  • I had smoked for 35 years & just decided to stop on 4th March, after my lovely daughter asked me to do "Race for Life" with her.
(I had breast cancer nearly 2 years ago, and was so stressed by the diagnosis, chemo, mastectomy and radiotherapy, that I just couldn't stop smoking, though I knew I really should.)
I then had visions of myself struggling (eventually!!) over the finishing line, all out of breath, so on Sunday 4th March, sometime during the evening I smoked my last cigarette, and haven't even had a drag since. It has been so much easier than I expected, and wonderful not to have to wonder where I would be able to smoke when we went out. I don't smell of smoke any more, my chest is clear and my skin does not have that "smoker's palour" and I have been in training for my Race for Life on May 6th, & can do the distance (running & walking) without getting out of breath.
I'm not going to be one of those who preach, but I found after the first 2 days it got easier & easier, and now I hardly think about cigs at all.

I really wish everyone the best of luck in giving up, once you've decided it really is so easy.
  • I gave up smoking on 29th March, and have generally felt OK so far. Using the NRT Gum (NiQuitin CQ 4mg) after 3 years of smoking an average of 25 a day. Worst period was when I was working on my gap-year in France, where I was smoking around 60 rollies a day!

I've been able to buy a nice single malt Scotch and a bottle of vodka since, and my flatmate has given up too. Being students, the extra money really does come in handy - I just had my first shop back from the holidays, and could buy proper food again!

Plus, I got a really great deal in my local Boots on the gum - was already on buy one get one half price (but still not as good as Savers £1.49 for 12), but then there were some 96 packs reduced to half price as well - so in total got 3 * 96 gum, and a 36 pack of lozenges for £21! So keep your eyes peeled - they were marked clearance, yet don't run out until Dec 2008!
    MSE: It's grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

Right I'm guilty by my absence, 'stuff' just happened and I reached for them, before I knew old habits kicked in and I'm back to 10 a day within a week.
Cross because I find it 'easy' to stop once I do stop IYKWIM.
I'm not going to stop stopping, just reread the thread, and got some insiration from some you all.
Going to pick a day this week and do it for good.
