  • It's been 8 days now since I've given up smoking and it's getting a bit tough. i think the excitement the first week is starting to wear off

On the boots quitting programme which is really helpful and handy as i don't have to wait for a doctors appointment to get my chewing gum.

    Best of Luck Everyone

Hi Need to be and welcome :)

I recommend you read a stop smoking book like Allen Carrs easy way to stop smoking (Amazon or Boots) also Nick casey's book has had similiar success too.

Once you read one of these, you will realise you don't need any aids to stop smoking, the success rate with these books is about 95%!
Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!
    Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945
    Smoke free days = 11 Years :T
Cash saved so far = £125,45,11
  • I have tried to quit, unsuccessfully, for over 3 years now and put on 2 stone in the process. This time it feels different though - I really think I've cracked it. I did use patches (as my will power alone is weak) but have not used any nicotine replacements in the last 6 weeks. I also used the Boots 'Change One Thing' system too. You can register easily online or go in store for a pocket sized leaflet about it. Bizarre as it sounds, having texts and emails sent to me at my weak moments (you can choose when and how they contact you) telling me how well I'm doing and how much money I've saved really has helped. Even though I know it's from a faceless Boots server and not a real person. AND it's Free!! I was smoking 15-20 a day.

My husband has used the gum only and is still chewing away, spending as much on gum now as he was in January.

Both of us, however have saved hundreds since new year as previously we were smoking 40-50 day between us.

    Good luck to you all!

Hi, I hope you are keeping strong - I don't know where you live but have you asked if your doctor will prescribe Zyban if you don't have conditions which rule out it being given to you?
I tried at least 6 times using NRT gum - I thought I was having a heart attack the pain in my chest was so severe. If that was heartburn it was far worse than it sounds.
Never tried the patches - always thought it was more expensive than the cigarettes.
I've been told that having a bottle of water - tap or mineral - to drink when the craving comes and/or a deep breath of fresh air will distract long enough for the longing to pass. Might be worth a try - I found the Zyban excellent and feel confident I'm truly an ex-smoker this time - I'll look out for your posts to see how you are getting on. Best of luck to you.
  • I have been trying to give up smoking for the last 20 years or so, and keep failing.

The problem is when I started smoking, it was because I caught my sister smoking, and she got me smoking so I could not tell tales.

Now she has passed through this world into another realm, (many years ago)

I feel that when I give up, it is like burning a photo of her, or a betrayal of her memory, Which when I have a cigarette in my hand sounds silly, BUT, when I give up it is a major disrespect.

How can I shake this cycle. The guilt to my daughter that I smoke, or the guilt to sister memory when I quit. So I do both, and feel guilty all the time, and depressed.

I dont think I will ever suceed.

I am very jealous of all of you that have, but, I do feel very happy and proud of you. Well done.

Hi, your post suggests to me that you are not ready yet to even try to give up.
Do you really smoke cigarettes to appease your sister's memory or are you addicted to nicotine and all the other habits that smoking entails?
Don't quit to please your daughter - but I predict that if you can give up she will be so proud of you - stop smoking for YOU!

    Step 1:
    a) Write a list of reasons you have for giving up.
    b) Write a list detailing when you smoke.
    c) Write down all the reasons you can think of to explain why you smoke.

When you know why and when you do and why you don't want to then -

Step 2: Seek some help - try the number on a cigarette packet or look in your doctor's surgery or health centre - pop in to Boots or look it up online.
Give it another go when you're ready and share your success here - everyone seems very supportive.
I've just read this back - I hope it doesn't preach - just wish to share what helped me.
  • Hi,
My mother passed away on the 15/4/07 she had Lung Cancer she was 65,she smoked 20 a day for most of her life, the day we were told by the Doctor (22/11/06) about the Cancer she gave up, some people have said to me that it was too late, I disagree with them allits never too late to quit. I will be eternally gratefull to my mum for quitting when she did, because her quitting inspired me to stop & it allowed us both precious time together over the past five months.

To anyone who attempts to give up please keep trying we all have to find our own motivation for stopping my mum gave me mine and I hope others can find that inspiration.
I have not smoked in six months, there have been times when I have had cravings however I think of my mum and how proud I was that she eventually found the will power and courage to stop and that is what keeps me going.

Keep trying its never too late!!
