Anyone else giving up smoking?

nhow wrote:I'm getting married in 3 1/2 days. When we met (over a year ago) my fiance did not smoke. 6 months ago he started again...not a lot at first but it's getting progressively more. I've told him how I feel about it...the smell of smoke makes me feel nauseous...I don't feel like being anywhere near him when I smell it on him, I'm worried sick about our future together...we're both in our mid 60's. He's said he'll quit several times in the past but has not managed it.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. I can't force him to stop. He has to want to. I know that. But it's really horrible to be so turned off by the one you love the most and not be able to do anything about it. And I'm terrified of what the future holds for us if he doesn't stop. I watched my uncle die of lung cancer.
Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Nhow
Go buy him Allen carrs book and ask him to read it, for your sake. ( I mention Allen carr as this is the book that made me stop smoking after 23 years, the very first time I tried).
I truly believe that if he reads it properly and takes everything on board, he will lose the desire to stop smoking.
I wish you luck.Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110 -

I tend to agree with this, but I do feel just reading the book isn't enough. You have to be convinced in yourself that you want to quit. I have lent the book to three other people. 2 didn't even get off the ground properly to quit , the third is currently on day 7, and I myself am on 5 weeks 3 days.
Nhow, Congratulations on your nuptials. I would suggest sitting down with new hubby and explaining how you feel, the as ragtime says above, show him the Allen Carr book and say this may make it easier for you.
Good luck with it.
You have to WANT to do it first.0 -

Hi FrugalJo,
Good luck with this - I have quit several times and have recently started again. I really want to change my outlook on smoking and reading this thread for the last couple of hours has given me a boost to stop.
SO, I'll join you in resurrecting this thread so we can post our updates. I have 1 cigarrete left in my pack which I will smoke at 5:30 and then I'm going smoke free again.
Good luck and keep us updated. If there's anyone else out there who wants to quit then the more the merrier :T

Hi John
Brilliant ! Always good to have some support
How many times have you stopped before?
Found it so easy last year. Just want my tastebuds back !
Cannot afford this healthwise or financially anymore.

I've given up smoking 4 months ago and to start with was spending loads on gum and lozenges. I went to the doctors and now get £90 of patches that last me a month for £6.50 - try it!0

Ok I lapsed last night, and in a way I'm glad I did.
Half of hubbies. No excuse. Just nicotine monster nagging me, so first day failure, today is a new day.The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. - Chinese Proverb

I've stopped a few times before. Twice for 6 months and about 3 times for around a week or two. Reading this thread has probably given me the biggest motivational kick of all.
I had my last one at 5:30 last night and so far I haven't had one yet. I've got some old nicotine gum that I'm going to try to not use but they will come in handy If I think I'm going to cave into temptation.
By my reckoning I've now gone 16 hours and 29mins
