Tesco.Com scam ?

I recently started shopping with Tesco online to buy my weekly groceries , and for seven weeks have been very happy with the service I received .

Saturday I attempted to do my weekly shop and everything was fine until I tried adding my cigarettes to my basket .I buy 300 cigarettes every week , in multi packs of 100s. when I attempted to add my cigarettes today the system would only allow me to add 2 multi packs .Confused, I rang the customer services line .I was told that a cap had been placed on the amount of cigarettes I was able to purchase, when I asked why I was told " probably because they think you would buy them and sell them on to make a profit " but That the cs rep would check On coming back to me she said " buying 300 cigarettes is classed as bulk buying ".

I rang up again to query this as it doesn't make sense to me that a supermarket would cap any shopping .Th cs rep said they were going to check out the problem I was then told that this decision had been made by the grocery.com manager at the store that delivers my shopping .I asked for the direct number so I could speak to the person myself , I was asked for my number and told I would get a call straight back .

After half an hour of waiting I was back on the phone trying to be put through to my local store , after 30 minutes of being given the wrong information I was finally connected with the manager of the .com grocery at my local store .When I explained the situation to him , he said "it was nothing to do with us, we certainly don't impose limits on how many cigarettes customers can buy, you have been given the run around .I suggest you ring Tesco customer services up again and get to the bottom of it . its nothing to do with this store "

Back to the phone again ( by this time I had been on the telephone for over two hours ), I asked to speak to a manager. The lady I spoke to told me she wasn't aware why I was encountering this problem but she would look into it for me and call me back.I then mentioned that I expected to be compensated for all the phone calls and was told " you were offered £10 goodwill but refused " .
I certainly wasn't offered anything of the kind and told her so , at the same time mentioning that as Tescos record all of their calls for training purposes they could go over everycall I had made and check out that I wasn't lying , an offer hadn't been made and I hadn't refused it.the CS manager told me she would get back to me after she spoke to the website technical team.

Ten minutes later I received the call .Tesco's have apparently decided to impose limits on the amount of cigarettes customers are allowed to buy this limit has now been set at 200 per customer .This was the first any of the team had heard of it , and as a smoker herself she could understand why I was so cross.

I quite frankly am very annoyed .Firstly with being called a black marketeer and then being called a Liar.To top it off though I am more annoyed that I will no longer be able to get my shopping via Tesco.com as when I purchase my shop I want to be able to get everything in one shop , not have a limit on what I am allowed to buy , only to have to go to another store for what Tesco don't allow .
Tesco are supposed to be helping that is their slogan " every little helps " apparently now its we will help when we choose to.
Is the next big thing going to be , we are cancelling all the 3 for 2 offers because its classed as bulk buying ? Who are Tesco's to impose limits on its customers, I hadn't realised they had joined forces with the government to stop people smoking !

Tesco will no doubt have their own reasons for taking this decision ( although even the customer service staff are at a loss to see why ).

As a smoker in a household of smokers I am now unable to get a complete shop because of their decision, therefor I will have to get my online grocery shopping from a store that doesn't dictate what I can and can't purchase.I am extremely disappointed !!!!

The corporate strategy on this hasn't been very well thought through has it ? Can you imagine how many of their .com customers smoke ? Do they not think that imposing limits on products will make people migrate to other shopping sites that don't impose them ?

It's Sunday morning now and I have just had a call from customer services ( after I posted on facebook )to say that they don't understand why this issue has occurred , apparently they have recently updated their website and that could be the cause of the issuse..a likely story ! but that if I was to buy individual packs of cigarettes I could purchase 99 packs .3 multi packs is only 300 cigarettes or 15 packets ( 15 packs which would come at the cost of an extra 27 pence)..It doesn't make sense .The people who can answer these questions aren't available until during the week so now I'm being given the run around again and have to wait for yet another call, which will give me the information , but not necessarily the information I want to hear and they may limit the amount of single packs consumers are allowed to purchase because of the enquiry . Does this sound like Every little helps ..honestly yes, it sounds like Tesco are making sure that every little bit of profit they can make out of the consumer will help their profits.

Surely if Tesco were trying to get every bit of money out of you, they would allow you to buy as many packs of any size as you want.

    This is not a scam.

Seriously where is the scam?? Why do people running around screaming scam just because they can't get there own way.

In answer to your OP they impose limits for many reasons, one of those reasons being that as your groceries are picked from the local store they are taken directly off the shelves. If they didn't limit somethings than the online shopping would clear the shelves leaving the store pretty bare for customers who go in store. As for your cigs they may only hold x amount of multi packs on the shelf at anyone time so that maybe the real reason (amongst other reasons) to stop you buying 100's of them.

I seriously suggest you remove SCAM from your thread title as there is no scam just someone being a bit over reactive!!

  • Well lovey bean, I'd stop calling Tesco scammers (because they're not, and you're being a silly billy) and focus on tackling your 'household' smoking habit. Good luck!

If she is paying good money for her cigarettes, who are you and Tesco ; the moral police?

Quite frankly, as long as she is paying, she should be able to buy as many cigarettes as she wants. How can it be marketeering if she is buying them at the price everyone else can buy them for. Tesco's are being ridiculous.

When I say scam I mean that they are making me pay more for the same item .To say that this is an acceptable practice and not scamming the public is just ignorant. As for my households smoking habit .Who are they or you to tell me to control it ? I don't drink alcohol or have holidays .This country has enough dictators without me being bullied on a site that's supposed to be here to help !If you have nothing constructive to say , then please remain silent .

Hmm let me see the scam , I am not allowed to purchase 300 cigarettes as a multibuy , but I am allowed to purchase 1,980 cigarettes seperately !

Its not a scam, the difference is multipacks are generally less in stock than singles. Multipacks can't be split and sold as singles so stock can't be replenished from multipacks. Try and order 100 single packets and I will bet you they will let you order them but they won't be delivered!!

Again its not a scam its just the way they as a company have decided to impose a limit on the multipack, which they are entitled too. They could also withdraw cigs from online sales if they choose, does that still make it a scam because you will have to go to the store to buy them!

Now go and put your toys back in your pram!!

It's quite likely that applies to multibuy offers on any product, not just cigarettes.

Simply just buy 2 multipacks and the rest as single packs or whatever.

Obviousy you'd be better off packing it in all together - smoking that is :D - you'd save yourself all this hastle - bliss .
