Credit Card Fraud!!!

Why would the travel agents that I booked with get the chargeback? :S The travel agents I BOOKED with were legitimate, there were two amounts that were to come off my credit card that I knew about - the rest I did not.

The companies that I have not authorised to take money out my account, the ones used fraudulently are the ones that would receive the chargeback (ie BA, ebookers, Airline PLC etc...).

I only use my credit card to book holidays with one Travel Agent and that has been the case ever since I got my credit card 5 years ago. I only ever use it there, I have another for general use. I believe someone has looked at the piece of paper where my agent was taking down the details before I had to go and they've taken a copy of it and used the details.

Thomas Cook (who incidentally are the travel agents I booked with, I work for Thomson) have told me that they do not believe it was anyone instore but they were conducting further enquiries but what can they do, short of hold each staff member at gunpoint and ask them if they used it? To be honest nothing...but to prove to them it was a staff member the bank/merchant would need to give me something in writing..any documentation that I can give the store manager and say right look...here's the proof, now what are you going to do about it?

I'm not playing detective, Thomas Cook have told me, If I can prove my details were stolen there, they will compensate me...but I need to do that, and foremost the staff member (if so) needs sacked.

The bank no doubt asks the merchant for details of the booking (inc. name/address) when querying the transaction to chargeback don't they?

How do you know it isn't the CC companies own internal staff in the UK or offshore?
Be very careful making allegations about people or companies for which you have absolutely NO evidence.

I think you should give up amateur sleuthing.
No thief in their right mind would put their own name/address down. That would be tantamount to a confession.

There may well be data protection act issue yes.
Let's just say I put in the wrong numbers by mistake.
That does not entitle you to have my name & address.
It could be a genuine error and they cannot give out other people's data willy nilly.

    Give it up.

It wouldn't have been the CC company, I know that much - if it was it would be traceable right back to them, even then they don't have access to all the details you need to conduct a fraudulent transaction.

How do you know they haven't? I mean it looks to me like it's airline tickets they have bought along with a random O2 top up but I got told that is what fraudsters do to ensure the card works before they go on their spree.

Why wouldn't they put their real name? Providing that they think they won't get caught, which to be honest...they won't. Even the police just refer you to your bank when you report a fraudulent transaction saying that it's upto them to refer it to themselves (the police).

What do you mean? Wrong numbers? You have got to be a very lucky person to put the details in wrong and get someone's actual details...

I still haven't had my original question answered, does anyone know if the Bank/Merchant will give me details of the person(s) involved in making the booking(s), fraudulent transaction or any documentation to give the travel agent store manager?

Fraudsters can, and do, book holidays/flights in ficticious names, they usually have a fake passport to go with them. I've taken great pleasure in the past in cancelling flights where i know that a fake name has been used, i usually like to cancel just the return flights, leaving them stranded and having to pay again !

I'm confused? How have you been able to do that? I have tried calling up BA and they will not let me have any details or cancel anything whatsoever...

Why don't you just ask the bank? You've had your answer, it's unlikely for a number of reasons that you will be given the information you want.

  • When my credit card was used fraudulently about three years ago, I rang the company shown on my CC statement as I had had an account with them in the past, but had never used my CC with them, only my debit card. They gave me all the info I asked for: ie what had been bought, where and when. They even asked me if I had a butchery business (which I haven't). When I rang the CC company, I told them all this info and they didn't seem surprised that I knew it.

I did get my money back quite quickly.

You are wasting your time expecting the CC company to actually do anything about this.

They won't tell you anything as you are not the one that has been dsfrauded, they are.

A similar thing happened to my wife card, a few small top ups to Vodafone followed by £2000 of flights with Dubai Airlines. It should have been quite a simple task to find the culprits but they weren't interested.

The card companies don't seem interested in following up on this, just blocking the card to prevent further losses.

It is probably down to cost, the money won't be recovered so why waste time and money pursuing it.

If it is an employee of the travel agent then the only consolation is that they will probably do it again once they have got away with it once. Eventually they will slip up and get caught. Even then don't expect their employer to do anything other than quietly sack them or give them the chance to resign.

Yes, but did you get given a name , real or not of who made the purchases?

I've not actually had any answer, and I am asking the bank. I thought some people on here might have been able to help.

I highly doubt that a rogue employee will have done something like that. It's just not viable to be honest. I don't expect to be given a name , that is what I'm asking. I'm asking if it is possible for me to be given a name real or not.. It's just to give the travel agent's if they have not got anyone employed in that store under that name then I will be satisfied and it will have been stolen in some other way.
It's not curiosity, it's about receiving further compensation from Thomas Cook regarding monies that have gone missing. If it is proven an employee of their's has done it then they will give me compensation, but I NEED to prove it.

It's not call centre's that I contact, it's called the company/bank's fraud department.

Tell you what, say it was someone in the travel agents? It's not slander or defamation then is it? It's called trusting my instincts.

It really isn't the same situation though is it? Did you actively bother to try and pester the bank/merchant to find out who it was that made the booking?

They may do something about it, Isn't that their duty?

How do you know they won't tell me anything? I understand the Data Protection Act but surely when there has been fraud this is not the case?
