90 in mine. 45 mile round trip twice a day. Tedious, to say the least.
omg that's a massive trip every day...how long does it take? I do remember years ago doing a school run and then nursery drop off and then to work and the total time was 90 mins or something insane but the actual distance was only a few miles..maybe 6 or 7 in total. The traffic is even worse now due to all the bus lanes (with no buses in them).

I'm in a hotel room again, but this time I can see The Shard straight out of the window :)
It's great isn't it? I can see it too through the trees and watched it go up. The sheen is something to do with the building materials I think.
The whole world of mobile phones is completely outside of my sphere of understanding... completely. I couldn't even explain the above posting to somebody as it's all just making a WHOOOOSH noise.

    :)

I'd like a new-fangled phone at some point, but there's so much to understand I wonder if I'll ever get round to it..
I was the same as you and got a blackberry torch. It's taken me about a year to use the essentials like e-mail, text and calls. When I 1st got it I couldn't even work out how to answer a call. They just need a bit of practise and a some time to RTM (read the manual). I have even used the browser on it to search train times but it's quite slow to load the page.

Thanks for the fox hunting explanations. We belive that English Heritage have been 'managing' the Canada Geese in the parks they have responsibility for and I know for a fact that the foxes are managed in this area.........none have mange at all and the numbers don't seem to increase.
Our woods are now taken over by Parakeets (which are really striking close up but sound like a flock of squeaky bath toys flying overhead) and rumour has it that that the hundres that now live here came from 2 escaped ones 10 years ago. They are causing problems for native small birds apparently, but no-one knows what to do with them.

Times have changed as my grandad used to shoot regularly in the woods behind us and shot the last !!!! pheasant during the war....and felt bad about it as he didn't realise at the time. It was quite common for several of them to go into the woods to shoot at the weekend back then.

I too love the variety on the NP's thread and feel very welcomed despite, probably having, the most shallow and useless job of all :D
    .
We are very misunderstood as a breed us designery types.

Good luck with the home hunting PN, can't offer any advice at all as totally out of my zone but surely there is someone in the H that could help with this...afterall, they will need to at some point if they want their bed free eh.

and good luck with dad LJ......very hard for him after so many years together.

  • Trying to find the old a new place to live ... but the system makes it virtually impossible to do much more than stick a pin in a book. First there is the book, with the list; each one takes different types of resident, we need one that takes a certain type of resident AND has a feature that isn't listed in the book. The book also doesn't say if there are vacancies. So we'd have to phone each one and ask if they have a space -and- if they have the special feature -and- "how much". Now, they won't tell you how much, they will only tell you their starting price; they add on extras based on your needs. So, with all the time in the world, you'd phone every one that seems the right sort, ask them if they have the feature and come up with a list of those with the special feature... then ask if they have a vacancy and how much. Then dismiss those that are way too pricey and that don't have a bed - and hope you're left with a list larger than 0 or 1. Then you have to visit them all to assess them. Next you'd have to ask them if they can do an assessment, which takes them 1-3 days to set up (or 7 days for the first one in our instance). Then they come up with an actual price. And all this can take ages.... meanwhile, old is still stuck in the H place taking up space. Oh .... and even if you manage to do all that there is a secret hitlist where the authorities have got their eye on certain homes that they're about to come down hard on (they're flagged as being bad places so need to avoid) .... and that information is entirely verbal/off the record.... this could take some time.

Reading fc123's post made me think.....
Have you tried speaking to someone at your local Age UK, PN? It's what used to be Age Concern. For some reason they are no longer concerned & now sound more like a limited company but they may be able to help.

Jumblies is correct...I still buy them for the boys.

Teenage boys? Eaten me out of house and home all school holidays...got 3 of the beggers.

Hunting? Have never taken part, not sure of my views.

Baking? I tend not to measure, just do it by eye....when doing the Christmas cake, it called for 210g of butter, I cut a chunk off then thought I had best weigh it just to be sure...it was bang on 210g.

I think I am finally starting to get back to normal, pain has completely gone now and I am not feeling quite so drained, I just have a multitude of appointments to look forward to now, including one procedure I am def not looking forward to. I finally told my mum today what was actually wrong with me, didn't want to tell her before or she would have worried all over Christmas.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

You think you know people then you find that of a weekend they dress up like neo-facists and provoke some fierce dogs to pursue a small defenceless furry animal across open countryside and watch it being ripped to pieces while still alive for fun.

I don't hunt myself, and never have. I don't fancy it at all.

OTOH, I'm not quite sure that the above comment qualifies for the NP thread - after all, michaels, we might not all approve 100% of how you conduct your life, but we aren't quite as rude about you or your family*.

    * Having said that my sister hunts quite a lot (the other does a bit)

DH thinks they may have been made by the company who originally made Wagon Wheels but they (the company) no longer exist &, guess what, we can't remember their name either :rotfl:
There was absolutely no way to eat them in a lady-like fashion.

    I never tried to!

I'm convinced you're describing Tunnock's teacakes. I'm back in Scotland now so I'll look out for them.

TBH down south I never see a fraction of the variey of cakes/pastries which you normally find in Scotland. I remember when yumyums and snowballs first appeared down south but I don't know for sure if they're still common. I've never seen paris buns or any of the other stuff you used to get in bakeries (probably that's a good thing).

Different countries seem to have different things they have in diverse versions. my parents came back from a holiday the Soviet Union with tales of endless varieties of vodka e.g you'd buy vodka and pepsi premixed in bottles - (yes the iron curtain countries had pepsi, it was China that had coke). Most communist countries had massive ranges of ice creams as did Italy. What they didn't have was massive ranges of foreign news media- when they asked for English newspapers they were told "of course" and then eventually given The Morning Star with half of it cut out!

In the US they had endless varieties of processed foods including an intriguing-looking box of stuff called "Suddenly salad" which I resisted the temptation to buy!:) (well in Scotland when you say salad people assume you mean chips)

  • Sounds scrumptious. It's Christmas - a bit sweet is fine

I come from one of those infuriating families where flour would get put in the bowl side of the scales & fat, eggs etc. on the weight side for all manner of pastry & cakes. I never managed to successfully crack that. I like to have measurements. I guess I'm not one of life's natural cooks.

I need exact measurements. My mother, who is an absolutely amazingly good cook, says things such as, "chuck in about half a pound of flour, a couple of eggs, a handful of sugar, and enough butter to bind it". That's useless for me.

Very irritating - you'd almost have to turn round and go out again the moment you got back in the morning.
