I've been to the ritz and the landmark relatively recently. The ritz was rubbish (because I hate dress codes, and it was full of american tourists) but the landmark was nice.
Three course dinner anywhere decent in London with a glass of wine would cost you £50 anyway, and you get more food at high tea (assuming you treat it as I do: an all you can eat buffet, with table service).
Ended up going to the latter and it was quite nice. Not been there before, the restaurant is in a hidden courtyard.
But it all turned out reasonably MSE in the end, £3 on train fare and £45 including service as we negotiated tea without champagne.
Ate enough so I don't have to have dinner too. :rotfl:0 -

'Twas my good self that was asking! Have side-stepped the problem for now but thanks for the info.
On another matter, regarding schools, I read about how the Swedish govenment sent teams to study why the Finns had overtaken them as the best achievers in school education. A Russian observer told them it was because the 70s never happened in Finland. I wonder what he meant? There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

In terms of the first one, it just highlights even more what a fantastic daughter you have been to your Mum and the great job you did, both before your Dad died and in terms of "functional caring" as you put it more recently.
Obviously none of us here can do anything to redress the damage that has already been done in terms of your self-worth, but can I please say I have always found you quite remarkable and wonderful. For sure you are quirky in your own way (I think we all are here and that's part of what binds us together). I couldn't wish more than for you to get the job you deserve and end up to realise what you could do given the opportunities. It's such a shame none of us are down there and can help out. But please, please, please, don't think nothing's possible because you really are amazing.
This. I think you're proper clever and funny too, PN. Something went right somewhereEverything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

When we first had DS, I worked out he cost about £12 a week. He could have been cheaper had he taken to breast milk and I taken to real nappies.
He is infinitely more expensive now he eats like a fully grown man. DD is cheaper to keep, possibly about the same as a fussed large dog with a big appetite for chew toys and hairbandsEverything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

The hunt is coming past at somepoint today, so tried to keep the birds in (two slipped out) and have had to lock the horses out and take their clothes off. Typically its peeing down, the grass where the horses are will be trashed and I'll have to keep them in for a couple of hours tonight (which will make them grumpy) in order to get them dry enough to clean the worst mud off and put rugs back on.
(In fact special girl and old girl have light weight rugs on, so they won't be as dirty but will be dripping with sweat.)
I thought hunting had been banned. Or did it become legal again?

ditto to above and the other PN postive comments...we think you're ace PN (using Cleavers description of you).:)
My siblings and self had a similar chat over Xmas about our upbringing too....but on a different slant. More to do with what we have chosen to do differently with ours and what things the same. One example was that none of us got to choose schools or were even asked our opinion. One day we left one and went to another.
Have you decided on when to sell the house yet? Don't forget to ask on this thread if the hosp are trying to make you take her back home if you don't feel able to cope with the F/T 24/7 caring.....viva knows what to do.:)
The school thingy...I was having a think about this and wonder if it's something as simple as smaller classes.......a class of 12 will interract more with the adult than a class of 30.
The 'better' thing is untrue and not something I have noticed at all but DD did notice the extreme difference in lifestyles during her year in the R school (well, between her own and the bulk of the others). It was very educational in itself and I am glad she had the experience. It was good for her to know uber rich people ( which is different to just very well-off) are just the same as not rich people from direct contact rather than me just saying in a sing sing voice 'well, we are all the same''.
A 'pool' party when she was at SE London primary entailed a group meeting up at the local council pool for a spalsh about and some junk food in the cafe afterwards. A 'pool' party she went whilst there was on a whole different level as it was a 25m affair attached to a mansion.
I recall considering not sending her there at the time as I thought she wouldn't fit in (and other silly lower middle class thoughts that crowded my head at the time) but she fitted in just fine. Plenty of common ground was found like watching Jersey Shore and learning how to stick on false lashes without glueing your eyelids together.0 -

Sit one in the corner with a hunk of bread and soup, wearing a cardigan you knitted yourself from 2nd hand/donated wool and you're probably even in profit.
I read somewhere it was 200k (or something) from birth to 18 but didn't that figure include a cost for the mum (either lost wages or equivalent to childcare) and cleaning. I would go google but CBA as it's late.:o0 -
