Yesterday, somewhere in the heating forum, somebody asked about marble radiators.... as I'd never heard of them, I had a quick look .... and .... they seem like a solution for some people in some situations. Might be worth tracking that thread down and seeing what people said about it.

Edit: Looks like they were dissed and nobody really answered https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/49402227#Comment_49402227

i emailed them just cos i was bored to see whether it was a nigerian scam. they appear to be able to correspond in english, but when i asked for technical specifications they just sent me (at 4am) a PDF of gibberish with no pictures of anything. i have asked whether they accept payment by western union money transfer.

It is fun isn't it - the chance to do it exactly the way you want to - I can see how DG has become addicted.

You're welcome to come and do mine if you want. I really hate DIY and the whole limbo stage that is required. This house is taking 3 years and we're still not even close. I hate it so much.

Returned from a lovely holiday :) to the cold.

Had a quick read up. All OK?

To catch up - went to a northern city uni and loved it (1982-85), also helped by meeting OH there.

In our absence DS2 coped admirably. DS1 still not returned from uni - pressure of work on a Masters allegedly.

DS2 received final uni offer, I think I posted about lessons in playing the system last month. Well it worked - he got offers from all his choices. Seems that grade inflation has nowhere left to go. His insurance offer (as I insisted he applied for at least one former polytechnic) is BBB. In my day, a poly would offer something like DD!

Definitely recommend going away to uni, a chance to grow up out of sight. I would say 50-200 miles with good transport links home. But isn't that a discussion for before the forms go in?

LIR, the island is just under a meter from the oven/ hob. So you can stand and turn without moving. Island to sink is 1.2m, drips on the floor will testify that a pace is required between the two. Having granite work tops means you can put hot pans down anywhere without worry.

Michaels, getting consent to let on existing mortgage will depend on your current lenders attitude. If they say no, you could get a fixed rate BTL mortgage on it short term with no exit fees. Getting a new resi mortgage for the new purchase should be straight forward if you have the salary to justify it and a deposit to put down. Though you will need to indicate that you intend moving into it straight away.

Do you find 1m comfortable for two people to pass each other?

Strangelyaltough my mortgage company don't do consent to let it would seem if you phone them and say you have a work contract requiring you to move away for 6-12 months then they do. However income multiples are an issue at the momnet as I am not planning to earn a decent monthly amount until next April for tax reasons. My lil bro is interested in the deal but he is working aborad and already has a btl in this country.

We're generally happy with DD going a long way away (and she's got her offers for those ones)- but there's a difficult choice if she also gets her offer of a nearby place. The distant (200 miles away)and local one are very evenly matched in most aspects so It's a tiebreaker situation. Neither would involve her staying at home BTW.

Speaking of former polys and of Milton Keynes- I sometimes think the biggest mistake this country made was not expanding the Open University instead of converting the polys into unis.

Do you have to shear them each spring or can they stay woolly? I visited a hobby farm once and the farmer said they didn't have to be sheared unless the wool was wanted and, even with a full coat, they stayed cool in the summer.

Are they 'pet-like'? I mean, do they come running up to the gate to see you or do they run away (like big flocks do)? I am guessing you don't eat one now and then.
    .

We shear them every spring. Or more exactly, we hire someone in to do that job:D There are one or two breeds of sheep which have been designed to be hairless, where it is not necessary to shear them. Almost without exception, though, it is bad management not to shear sheep. It is not a question, necessarily, of whether they are uncomfortable. If coats get too long it provides a habitat for flies to lay eggs in - which the sheep can't get to, meaning the sheep is more likely to get fly strike. Fly strike is where maggots hatch on the sheep skin and start eating it alive.

Of course we eat our own sheep: anyone who owns sheep, and breeds them will have to eat them eventually. Half of the sheep produced will be males, and most will not be suitable for breeding.

People who keep farmyard animals and don't eventually eat them are probably doing those farmyard animals a disservice.

edit: sheep will run after you if you have food in your hand, and they will run away from you if you do not.

Are tulip trees the same as Magnolia trees? I love those. We have a dead cherry tree out front that we have been ignoring (as been too busy to get around to chopping it down and so on) but going to have to sort it next spring.
No, and there are diff types of magnolia too. Last spring was good for magnolias, the spring ones looked amazing. A friend has a magnolia stellata with clematis with the same colour flowers growing through....its a beautiful pairing.

tulip trees have similar big flowers to the mag grandiflora, but look just like....well...tulips! The flowers are yellow with a soft orange stripe..http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=tulip+tree&hl=en&sa=X&rlz=1T4SNYK_en-GB___GB445&biw=1280&bih=663&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=aPTxoUdLjiZROM:&imgrefurl=http://www.flickr.com/groups/tuliptree/&docid=1Pr4dM32ZF-EJM&imgurl=http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1026/557008252_17805186d1.jpg&w=500&h=500&ei=QGnwTvSmNoeU8gPzlPnCAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1013&vpy=174&dur=1642&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=163&ty=86&sig=107523929845909818702&page=1&tbnh=146&tbnw=148&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0

A nativity scene made from ex shop mannequins would be amazing. If you can't get a baby/child one you could just use a torso so it'll fit in the crib.;) If you need any cloaks run up for the wise men, drop me a line with 6 weeks notice.
    It would be huge though.....
    ]

we have a sort of covered area where I sometimes leave the car that would fit it all in.....but it would mean I' have to put the car in a barn all over the christmas season. :)

What do they do if the food you have in your hand consists of bits of dead sheep?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
