Almost lunchtime and I'm off to the local Specsavers.
Near vision was gradually going downhill for the last couple of years, and now came to the point that my arms weren't long enough anymore to hold a book or paper far enough.
Had an eye test last week and near vision is +1.25... don't know if that's a lot or not.
Anyway, the frames have been chosen and will pick them up now.
Not looking forward to wearing glasses, but looking forward to be able to read comfortably again
I remember getting glasses for the first time. What made me realise was driving along the motorway, & slowing to read the sign to see if that was my junction. I had to slow to 40mph to read it :o
That persuaded me.
I felt wierd getting glasses. I now dread to think about some of the stuff I have missed seeing over the years.:oIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
I fell off my motorbike four times and the two most serious of those were both at very low speed when I got a leg trapped under the bike. Both times I was on teaching practice and, annoyingly, on the second occasion the staff room was upstairs and pretty inaccessible to someone with a stick.
The third time, it was on a very wet road and I literally skimmed along, stood up and found there was hardly a mark on me or the bike.
The last time, a hidden sheep leapt out from behind a gorse bush straight into my path. I was doing about 45-50mph. I don't know what happened to the sheep, but it was obviously well enough to run off. A horse doctor picked me off the road. Again, I was almost uninjured, as my clothes/helmet had protected me, but dropping from a height onto the road surface and bouncing around knocked all the wind out of me and I blacked-out.
I sold what was left of the bike. Never been on one since. Horrible things!
My dad used to have a bike when younger. He came off it in a town centre, & his leg went through the wheel, with all the spokes etc digging into his leg.
He & mum banned me from ever having one.
I've ridden pillion once in my life. That's it.It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

After I have used the oven (and tbh I rarely if ever give it time to heat up if I am simply reheating) I leave the oven door open so the warmth goes into the kitchen
what I do have because of old style, is a slow cooker. And I hate it. I've just got it down after not using it for over a year, to make chilli in. TBH, I hate it, and would much rather have made the chilli on the hob. As it is, I started it yesterday (with the idea of re heating tonight for better flavour) but just as well as last night I loooked at the yucky stuff and thought DH wouldn'teat it, but haveing put it on again today for another 8 hours its ALMOST good. OK is probably more apt. If I'd made it my normal way on the hob it would have been superb.
I have learne this week I still don't love the slow cooker but I might be cooking stuff for too short a time in it and need two days rather than one for some stuff:eek:
edit: if e were having beans on toast would be beans on hob, toast under grill if we ddn't have a toaster. We do have a toaster but I don't like it much. The only thing I mis about an aga type stove is the toast.
Microwaves are evil imo.
Simple things like beans, or soups, the tatse from the hob is so superior. Texture too. Plus, food hob cooked seems to me to retain its heat better. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I have very long sight. I hated losing the Superman vision I used to have.
When I complained about the way my specs were reducing it, the gap between close and far lenses being too much, apparently, the optician said, "You are just seeing what the rest of us have always seen. You'll have to get used to it!"
Stuff on my hob tends to get burnt. The nuker is safer.0 -

in a posh restaurant, they want 12.5%, because they have taken a cork out of the wine bottle instead of removed a screw-top, and they come around every ten minutes to refill your water and wine glasses for you, even though you actually would rather they let you do it yourself.
in asia de cuba (a restaurant which thinks it is posh but is in fact is just expensive in a wayne rooneyeseque way) they add 15% onto the bill which is to be distributed between all the staff, and then the waiter expects you to leave another 15% just for him and tells you explicitly that is what you are supposed to do.
i don't know how this is generally received, but it worked out rather badly for him and the kitchen staff when he tried it on me. the only time i can recall not leaving any tip at all somewhere half-decent.
That isn't posh, it is tacky. & not half decent either. Therefore doesn't qualify for a tip.
IMO a tip should never be expected. Tipping for me isn't a fixed percentage, it depends on the quality of service.
In example, went somewhere with a vegetarian friend for a meal who asked if they used meat stock in their gravy. They replied that they did & friend politely declined gravy explaining that he couldn't eat it knowing this.
5 mins later, waiter pops over to the table whilst we're all eating with a jug. He explained he went & mentioned it to the chef who knocked up some veggie gravy just for my friend.
That got an excellent tip, as they went beyond the call of duty.:)It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

They are not very smart when you are on supply, teaching a naughty class. One quick nudge on the projector with the window pole during break, and then your writing appears 15cm away from where you place the pen!
I suppose it's the modern equivalent of hiding the chalk.0 -
Another nice people survey: coke or Pepsi? Diet coke or Pepsi max?
We are a coke/ diet coke family.
On pricing. However much you buy gets drunk. So probably comparing the price of a 6 pack against the price of an 8 pack is valid. Both will be drunk by the week end.
I can drink pepsi, diet pepsi, diet coke. I can't drink coke. Foul after-taste.It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0
