I have a huuuge amount of trees and shrubs etc that need some serious pruning but being slap bang in the middle of a town a bonfire with the debris isn't really a viable option. A supply of free mulch is an attractive bonus.
Has anyone got a shredder?
Advice and recommendations actively sought:)
I can tell you about my unhappy experience with a shredder. We chopped a good 3-7 feet off the top of our privet hedge, so ended up with piles of cut stuff all over the lawn. This was not your little soft clippings, but great branches up to to an inch thick. There was ivy in there as well - really thick bits.
I hired a large heavy duty electric shredder for the weekend, and set to. It was deafening, and eventually I had to stop because I had a delegation of neighbours complaining! I ended up keeping the machine for a week, as the neighbours were not so fussy during the week. And, basically, I wrecked the shredder. One of the teeth on the plate inside broke off, and the machine more or less vibrated itself to bits.
If I were doing the job again, I would get a much bigger machine - a petrol engined chipper. I'd have got the job done in a fraction of the time, and it wouldn't have cost much more overall. Besides that, the neighbours would have had a heck of a noise for 2 hours, rather than only slightly less noise for 2 or 3 days.
This is the one I hired (they recommended it!) http://www.hss.com/?p=62812
This is what I should have hired http://www.hss.com/g/62816/Petrol-Shredder.htmlNo reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Daily Mail readers.... anybody got yesterday's/today's MoS and not using those DM Rewards cards? I need a unique set of numbers for yesterday and today. I thought the nice people might secretly read these papers, yet no be so tacky as to collect the numbers, so somebody might have yesterday's/today's. Ill old's been collecting them, but now in Hospital and yesterday's edition was delivered without the card ... and today I am not there to see if there's a card ... and you have to input the numbers before Wednesday.0

How thick do you think the branches could be? we're killing some small trees, about 20-30cm in diameter by the trunk and i'd like to chip them away for myself rather than taking it to the tip...0 -

Should that read mm? I can't see anything hire-able dealing with trees a foot thick! I dealt with a few up to 20mm myself last winter and I'd call the result 'logs.'0 -

That must have been fun for DH (-:
Oh well, you know now! No hiding the best and the worst of it.:D

right break from arson over. We're off to set another fire.
I have to go out and rustle undergrowth while singing to scare away wild creatures.0 -
Anyone fancy having a go at part of, the driving theory test? It is not that difficult actually, they appear to have 80% easy (bordering on the ridiculous
) and a few tricky ones. It is not that much different than the owd days when they asked you less question but they were all tricky.
My scores, the signs test 33 out of 35, the theory test 44 out of 50 (I think). I honestly thought I would do really bad because I don't keep up to date, but I probably passed.
Example of bordering on the ridiculousIf someone pulls out on you at a roundabout, do you?
a) Flash your lights at them
b) Wave your hands and swear at them?
c) Honk your horn at them
d) Stay calm and proceed on with your journey.

Can anything chip a 300mm tree trunk - that's a foot across in old money? You could sell it for firewood maybe. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I've been there a couple of times and the locals were great, really enjoyed travelling around and there are still things left for me to do in future visits.
